Job Description

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Regular/contract instructors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advance of the visions, missions and values of the college and District. This position will include a combination of day and evening assignments, face to face and online courses, large lectures and small seminars, and is being offered by a college strongly committed to the “open door” concept serving a diverse student population. Instructors will be expected to participate in the continuing administration of the Theatre department and perform other duties consistent with their faculty job description as stated in the faculty contract.

The Theatre Arts Program offers AA degrees, Certificates of Achievement, a performance degree, a technical theatre degree, a musical theatre degree, and a full suite of lower division transfer courses. In addition to the year-round production schedule, which includes five major and two minor productions, the department further assists student development by maintaining strong ties to local and professional theatres. The Theatre Arts Department uses multiple venues which are equipped with the latest technologies in Sound, Lighting, and Computer Design technologies. The Department is fully staffed in performance assistance; the faculty and staff are working professionals in the theatre community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: APPLICANTS MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

Master's or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/ performance OR Bachelor's or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance AND Master's in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature or humanities OR the equivalent.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS - Applicants must demonstrate:

1. Academic preparation for and successful experience teaching at the secondary, community college, or university level, including costume design, theatre make-up design and application, costume history, general education theatre arts courses, and various costume construction skills and techniques.

2. Recent examples of design experience including a portfolio reflecting a variety of costume construction techniques.

3. Experience with professional theatre practices regarding safety and respectful behavior in a collaborative setting.

4. Ability to teach an established curriculum, modify an existing curriculum to reflect current trends in Theatre Arts instruction and training, and to perform a wide variety of tasks associated with the production of theatre, all in concert with the greater Grossmont College community to maintain an integrated program.

5. Demonstrated ability to prepare and develop online curriculum, and teach in a variety of modalities.

6. Sensitivity to, understanding of, and commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, disability, sexual orientations, gender expression, ideological affiliations and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

7. Ability to successfully instruct and motivate community college students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, disability, sexual orientations, gender expression, ideological affiliations and ethnic backgrounds.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS - Applicants will also be evaluated for qualifications in the following:
  • Experience in and comprehension of associated theatre discipline(s) (i.e. scenery, lighting, sound, technical direction, projections, etc.).
  • Demonstrated involvement with live theatre production at different levels (professional, university, college and/or secondary).
  • Ability and willingness to participate in all full-time faculty responsibilities, including faculty meetings, committee assignments, advisory committees, and student activities.
