Description of Program:
The resident will assist with direct care to a diverse patient population as well as support the success of student interns from diverse backgrounds. Other responsibilities include on-call and attending and/or lecturing at seminars. This position will report to the Program Coordinator.
All applicants selected for admission must sign a standard employment contract. Standard University benefits and continuing education funding apply. A criminal background check is required by the state of Missouri.
A participant in a qualified residency program should be in the advantageous position of being able to select among several career opportunities in optometry. Schools and colleges of optometry, Veterans Affairs Hospitals, HMO'S, industry and private settings generally prefer hiring an O.D. who has completed a clinical residency program.
Length of program: 54 weeks

Requirements for Completion:
Completion of the 54 weeks of residency program
Clinical decision making and patient care are at the appropriate independent level
Completing all assignments
Attending the assigned clinic services
Responding promptly to emergency patient services
Attending all required seminars
Presenting once a semester at the College of Optometry grand rounds and attending at minimum two grand rounds each, fall and winter
Conducting case conferences to fourth year professional students
Completing referral letters in a timely fashion
Completing a minimum of one scholarly activity
Develop at least one manuscript of sufficient quality to be published in a refereed journal
Present a paper at the college’s Annual Residency Day
Completing patient logs and monthly activity logs to be turned in at the end of each month to the Program Coordinator and the Director of Residencies
Attend either the annual meeting of the American Academy of Optometry or the College of Optometrists in Vision Development
Resident performs at least a 3.0 on a 5.0 scale on all measures on evaluations
An exit interview will be arranged with the Pediatric/Binocular Vision faculty
The Certificate will be awarded by the Program Coordinator. (The resident will be recognized at the College of Optometry Commencement, but will not receive their certificate until on or about July 15)

Curriculum Description:
The resident participates in patient care via providing professional services in the Center for Eye Care, either in residency clinic or supervising students. In addition, the resident provides clinical supervision in the primary care service of third year students. The resident also provides emergency coverage and scheduled patient care during times students are on breaks. The resident attends, at minimum, one professional meeting, usually the annual meeting of the American Academy of Optometry. The resident participates in regular discussions and critical reviews of literature. A research paper, literature review, or case report suitable for publication in a refereed journal is required.
Qualifications
O.D. degree from an Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) accredited program by starting date
Preference given to GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale
Successful completion of National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) boards
Eligible for Missouri optometry licensure (Must obtain licensure by November 30 of the year the residency started)
