Job Summary

The O ffice of Victim Assistance encourages applications for an Embedded CU Police Department Victim Advocate ! This role requires an experienced Victim Advocate who can practice independently and as a team member with the Office of Victim Assistance (OVA) and CU Police Department (CUPD). This position requires the ability to exercise good judgment, communicate in a timely and effective manner, and to be flexible. This position provides advocacy services in person (sometimes via telehealth) for the campus police department, and ensures accurate and timely communication, coordination, and documentation of the interactions and referrals provided. Collaboration and coordination with other campus departments is important for the support of victims. CUPD responds to all calls on campus and sometimes off campus (including city and county of Boulder), and the OVA and CUPD serve CU Boulder students, staff, and faculty members, as well as some unaffiliated people harmed on campus property. Maintaining confidentiality on all information, records, communications, and personnel matters is required. The incumbent will ensure that issues of diversity, social justice, and trauma-informed care are considered in all assessment and advocacy services provided. This position does not do long-term/ongoing advocacy or counseling work, or respond as a clinician to any mental/behavioral health or suicide attempt calls. This position can be used for secondarily affected people at these types of mental health situations only.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Advocacy
  • Respond to call outs by CUPD to provide advocacy to victims of various crimes that CUPD is responding to. This includes going on-scene, and occasional phone advocacy, to meet CUPD officers and victim(s) to review Victims’ Rights and other options such as medical, administrative, academic, civil, and victim compensation if applicable.
  • Provide trauma-informed care. Emotional support, help empower victims to make informed decisions, supporting what the victim wants to do.
  • Safety planning with victims.
  • In-the-moment communication between victim and police if applicable.
  • Be present when property is returned to people/families in death and major case investigations.
  • In sexual assault cases can help review the Campus Information Sharing Act (CISA) , form, which allows victims’ names to be passed to OVA clinical day staff and or the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance (OIEC). If a CISA form is not signed, victim name cannot be given to OVA advocate counselors.
  • Review and outreach on CU Police reports.
  • Be a resource for OIEC, including safety and supportive measures team for after-hours advocacy and consults in coordination with CUPD.
  • Help connect victims to OVA’s confidential victim advocate counselors for ongoing advocacy, follow up and/or counseling, as well as other appropriate referrals and resources.
Administrative
  • Participate in day time meetings with other members of the OVA team, and in day and night meetings with CUPD.
  • Become trained/certified in CJIS (Criminal Justice Information System) for access to CUPD records.
  • Record advocacy interventions by completing an OVA form that is sent to the OVA office for tracking purposes.
  • Attend trainings relevant to the work.
  • Co-present with OVA advocate counselors to CU Police and other community partners about services and other relevant topics.
What You Should Know
  • This position will work some days, nights and weekend hours, some on campus, and some on-call shifts.
  • This position will require a background investigation including a criminal and financial check, polygraph test, a psychological evaluation, reference checks, finger printing, and drug screening.
  • All University of Colorado Boulder employees are required to comply with the campus COVID-19 vaccine requirement . New employees must provide proof of vaccination or receive a medical or religious exemption within 30 days of employment.
What We Can Offer

The annual salary for this position is $50,000 – $55,000. Onboarding assistance is available within department guidelines.

What We Require
  • Bachelors'/higher educational degree in criminal justice, psychology, social work, and/or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • Three years of experience providing victim advocacy and crisis intervention or similar work.
  • Experience with a trauma informed approach to advocacy services, including working with issues related to various crimes and traumatic experiences, including, but not limited to: grief, sexual assault, partner abuse, stalking, experiences of bias/hate crimes, mass violence, natural disasters, and other crime violations.
What You Will Need
  • Access to a car/transportation and able to get to the Boulder campus within 60 minutes of being requested on scene when on-call, prefer sooner.
  • Good communication and social skills to build and maintain effective working relationships with staff and a diverse range of constituents.
  • Knowledge of victims’ rights.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to social justice and inclusive excellence.
  • Ability to be organized and detail oriented.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Experience and interest in working with people from multicultural backgrounds and marginalized populations.
  • Experience working in a university or college setting.
  • Experience with conducting advocacy in another language besides English, such as Spanish, Mandarin, or Arabic.
  • Knowledge of Title IX, campus misconduct policies.
  • Master's/Higher educational degree in criminal justice, psychology, social work, and/or related field.
  • Experience with/knowledge of the LAP, Lethality Assessment Program.
