The starting salary for the position is $39,000 ($18.75/hour) but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, the Financial Specialist I will be part of the administration team within the Department of Oncology/McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research. The role will provide high customer service to faculty, staff, and students on a variety of departmental financial transactions. This position will review and submit requests with purchasing, accounts payable, and travel related items, keep financial records, and support the administrative team.

Responsibilities:

Prepares and advises on general financial transactions and reconciles transactions. Creates general reporting on transactions. Maintains financial records, provides administrative processing support, and provides customers service for staff and customers in an assigned program area to support program financial management.
  • 20% Audits, monitors, organizes, and updates fiscal records, reports, and affiliated materials
  • 45% Audits or processes transactions and assigns funding codes in accordance with established rules, regulations, and policies
  • 10% Audits or reconciles original purchase documents with payments
  • 10% Drafts basic communications and reports and maintains organization of varied records to provide administrative support within a specified work unit
  • 10% Answers general fiscal questions and provides information based on set materials and standards to various audiences
  • 5% Serve as a back up to other Administrative Office personnel as needed

Education:

Preferred
H.S. Diploma

Qualifications:

- Experience, training, or certificates in Accounting, Finance, or other business areas preferred.
- Prior experience working with complex automated accounting and payment systems such as WISER, UW Purchasing, and other UW financial systems.
- Proficient in Microsoft 365 particularly in Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Ability to work independently on resolving matters timely, effectively communicate and develop good relationships with others, and maintaining records is a must.
- Administrative experience/knowledge of the biological sciences field preferred.

Work Schedule:

Business hours are from Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Flexible scheduling or work schedule to be agreed upon.

Part Time: 60% - 80%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

The McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research is also designated as the Department of Oncology within the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. Our administrative team actively supports departmental research and their pursuit of understanding cancer.

The successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring eligibility for employment in the United States on or before the effective date of the appointment. University sponsorship is not available for this position.

Effective January 1, 2020, the U.S. Department of Labor Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be updated to require that positions earning less than $35,568 annually be considered non-exempt under FLSA provisions for overtime (see https://www.dol.gov/whd/overtime2019/ ). Based on these rules, if the person selected for this recruitment will earn less than the new salary threshold at January 1, 2020 ($35,568 annually), he/she will be an academic staff non-exempt employee, will be paid hourly, and will receive overtime compensation for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek.
