Position Summary:

The Student Finance Officer (SFO), under the direction of the Associate Director of Student Finance, provides assistance to prospective and continuing students in understanding the policies and procedures of financial aid programs, and the interpretation and compliance of federal regulations – Title IV federal and state financial aid. The incumbent must possess an excellent knowledge of and demonstrated ability to administer generally accepted practices with regard to financial aid, in compliance with applicable regulations. In addition, the SFO is responsible for providing assistance to prospective and continuing students with student account inquiries. The incumbent must possess excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills and relate well to a broad variety of constituencies.

Starting Salary: $51,000

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four year college or university, or equivalent experience in Financial Aid and/or Accounting/Student Accounting roles.

Experience: Two (2) years of experience in Financial Aid, Student Business Services, or similar environment. Knowledge of state and federal student financial aid program. Higher education work experience required.

Certifications, Licenses, etc.: None

Skills:

• Proficient computer skills with Microsoft Office applications, as well as Campus Nexus or other equivalent SIS database preferred.

• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

• Sensitivity to cultural diversity and ability to communicate and interact effectively with people of all ages and diverse background.

• Proven ability to work effectively as a team player.

• Highly motivated, focused and results oriented.

• Ability to exercise discretion and tact in all interpersonal contacts, and to maintain confidentiality at all times.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Counsel potential and current students and their families on all phases of the financial aid process. This includes program availability, application information and processes, eligibility determination, financial aid disbursement, federal, state regulatory requirements, and institutional policies.

• Respond to written and oral student finance requests, ensuring students understand their financial status and advise them accordingly.

• Provide guidance on institutional, state and federal policies and procedures.

• Proactively contact students via phone, email, and portal to ensure a student is financially cleared.

• Notify and request necessary documents from students through telephone, email, and portal notifications.

• Maintain current knowledge of federal regulations, state requirements and institutional policies pertaining to eligibility determination.

• Interface with other Departments – Admissions, Registrar, and Academic Departments in regard to assisting students and providing guidance on financial aid requirements.

• Maintain working knowledge of federal policies/procedures through on-going training to stay current on the frequent regulatory changes associated with federal financial aid programs.

• Provide instructions to students on how to use the portal, read and understand documents, set up payment arrangements, and accept payments.

Job Description – Student Finance Officer

• Be a point-person for cash and check receipts on-campus. Assist in bank deposits and submitting backup to Student Business Services.

• Assist walk-ins when necessary and manage schedule of phone, in-person, and videoconferencing appointments.

• Review students for unpaid aid and research issues to assist in timely disbursements.

• Assist in on-campus admissions and student services events including open houses and orientations.

• Perform other related tasks, projects, and duties as required, assigned, or directed.

Supervisory Responsibility:

Direct Reports: None

Indirect Reports: None

Internal: Interacts with supervisor to receive direction and instructions and/or review of work results. Works with other constituents within the University in regard to students enrollment and advising. Works closely with other team members including the FAA team, SBS, the Associate and Director of Student Finance.

External: Works daily with students and their families to explain and assist with the federal and state financial aid application and disbursement processes.

Primary Work Location, Hours & Travel Requirements:

Office Location: On Campus

Work Hours: Standard office hours, infrequently may be asked to work evenings or weekends.

Travel: Infrequent

Work environment is in a standard office setting. Frequently exposed to low to moderate noise, various odors, temperature changes, and equipment with moving parts, including but not limited to computers, phones, printers, and other standard office equipment.
