Job Summary

The Assistant Director is responsible for the guidance and implementation of a learning-based community in a residential environment. The Assistant Director will have direct supervision of Master's Degree level Resident Directors and indirect supervision of graduate and student staff. Supporting an environment focused on engaging students in their academic success and social development is a priority for this position.

The Assistant Director will participate in the creation, execution and evaluation of a residential program including residential learning communities and a residential curriculum model. Central duties may include responsibility for chairing departmental committees, departmental training, development, selection, student leadership, and assessment. Strong collaboration between University Housing and campus partners on both the Statesboro and Savannah campuses will be important.

This position is classified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) as identified through the Jeanne Clery Act federal legislation.

The Assistant Director of Resident Life reports to the Associate Director of Residence Education.

Responsibilities
  • Staff Supervision/Development - Responsible for the direct supervision of professional Resident Directors, a Graduate Assistant, and indirect supervision of Graduate Resident Directors and student staff. Developing intentional practices to assist the development and growth of professional staff, including formal and informal evaluations
  • Student Learning & Curriculum Development - Responsible for establishing a learning-focused environment conducive to the academic success and personal growth of residents
  • Community Development - Responsible for working with the Resident Directors and student staff to develop educational, cultural, social, and recreational activities within their assigned area
  • Student Conduct - Responsible for enforcing the behavioral standards set by Georgia Southern University, the Dean of Students Office, and University Housing
  • Crisis Intervention and Risk Management - Responsible for responding to the group and personal needs of the students in the area
  • Residence Hall Administration - Responsible for implementing effective management practices in handling the day-to-day operations of the halls
  • Staff Selection, Training and Development - Serve as Chair of selection and/or training committees for staff selection process. Develop and evaluate learning outcomes for assigned level of staff
  • Respond to any departmental needs in the absence of the Associate Director or Director of Residence Education
  • Assist with special projects assigned by the Associate Director or Director of Residence Education or University Housing


Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
  • Master's Degree

Required Experience
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of progressive experience in a supervisory position in a residence hall environment


Preferred Qualifications

Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Higher Education Student Services, Counseling, or a related field

Preferred Experience
  • Five (5) or more years of progressive experience in a supervisory position in a residence hall environment
  • Experience supervising graduate level staff members


Proposed Salary

$49,400 - $60,000

This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.
