FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Theatre at Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applicants for a full-time lecturer (doctoral schedule) position in Theatre, with a specialization in African American theatre effective September of 2023.

Applicants will be expected to divide responsibilities between teaching classes in the Theatre Department and coordinating and teaching classes for the Humanities course Explorations in the Arts. We are seeking a creative artist/scholar with expertise from among the following areas: African American theatre history and literature, acting/directing, and dramaturgy. Applicants should have a demonstrated knowledge of the NYC arts world and its diverse creative communities and be able to serve the department’s and the college’s commitment to diversity, inclusion and global awareness. The candidate should identify with the mission of the department which sees theatre as an integral part of a liberal arts education and should be an active participant in the life of the Theatre Department.

 RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lecturer faculty teach four 3-credit courses per term (24 credit hours per year).
  • Teaching responsibilities may be reduced by an amount commensurate with additional administrative and advising and responsibilities
  • Teach courses in African American theatre and/or in area(s) of expertise in the Theatre Department.
  • Serve on departmental and college committees.
  • Provide student advisement.
  • Join the teaching staff of the Humanities course Explorations in the Arts.
  • Coordinate sections of Explorations in the Arts,including supervising curriculum, arranging event tickets, museum visits, and guest lecturers.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will possess:

  • An MFA or PhD in Theatre.
  • At least five years of college teaching experience at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
  • Excellent teaching and peer classroom evaluations.
  • Demonstrated administrative and advising skills.
  • Intimate knowledge of NYC theater and arts landscape.
  • A commitment to values of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Support of the vision and mission of the Theatre department.

VACCINE REQUIREMENT

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment. 

COMPENSATION

Salary commensurate with education and experience ($75,215 - $88,998)
