Position Summary

The assistant coach for Men’s Football serves as defensive assistant/special teams coordinator and is responsible for assisting in all aspects of administration and operation of the competitive NCAA, Division III Football Program in the Empire 8 athletic conference at SUNY Cortland. This is a full-time position with an 11-month obligation (8/1-6/30 annually).

Major Responsibilities
  • Assist the head coach with all matters pertaining to the total operation of the men’s football program at SUNY Cortland.
  • Serve as Defensive Assistant/Special Teams Coordinator. Maintain and/or build the sport program that is competitive at the conference level
  • Recruit prospective student-athletes in accordance with the NCAA, Empire 8 and SUNY Cortland rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Recruit adequate numbers of student-athletes with sufficient skill to be as competitive as possible within the guidelines set by the NCAA and the policies and procedures of Empire 8 and SUNY Cortland
  • Assist in academic performance of student-athletes with regard to ongoing eligibility, academic monitoring and academic retention.
  • Provide general advising, mentoring and support to student-athletes
  • Demonstrate effective coaching through content knowledge, practice construction and execution, and the affective dimension (e.g., interpersonal interactions, enthusiasm, respect and rapport).
  • Demonstrate effective teaching and advising (i.e., instruct student athletes in how to perform in their sport and at the college level; instruct student athletes in physical health (strength, conditioning & skill training); instruct individual/team concepts, and safety
  • Implement appropriate risk management strategies at all times Demonstrate concern for the overall welfare of student athletes at all times
  • Ensure all documentation and paperwork is completed in a timely fashion.
  • Represent the university in a professional and ethical manner, modeling outstanding sportsmanship, consistent with SUNY Cortland mission, vision and campus priorities.
  • Demonstrate continued growth and development in sport by continuing education, participation in professional organizations, enrollment in training programs, and research.
  • Supervise athletes and monitor the facilities for purposes of safety and facility security
  • Execute all of these responsibilities as assistant coach in a manner that reflects an ongoing commitment to the excellence, integrity and success of the men’s football program; the Athletics Department and SUNY Cortland

Job Requirements:
  • Ability to recruit, inspire, mentor, coach and teach highly talented student-athletes.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships
  • Reports to the head coach, men’s football.
  • Works closely with the athletic director, student-athletes and athletic coaching staff to ensure success of SUNY Cortland men’s football program.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrated experience coaching at the college level on the defensive side of the ball.
  • Experience in coaching/coordinating Special Teams
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Physical Education, Sport Management, Exercise Science or related field
