Post Doctoral Fellow

Job Details

Description

The Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science is searching for a postdoctoral fellow who will work on the development and formalization of new processes to support AI development teams in addressing responsible AI challenges from the very earliest stages of a new project, including (1) ideation & problem formulation, and (2) project selection. This will involve, for example, working with AI development teams who are interested in developing new AI-based systems to augment the abilities of human professionals in a given domain.

Working with the project team, the postdoctoral fellow will iteratively pilot the new process and materials both with relevant industry professionals and with masters students enrolled in professional programs at CMU (in areas such as AI, UX, and product management). During this phase, we will observe how teams attempt to implement our process and we will solicit direct feedback from participants. We will draw upon our observations and participants’ feedback to iteratively improve both the overall process and specific materials. Finally, the postdoctoral fellow will work with the team to run a set of evaluation studies to understand the impacts of the new process on teams' AI innovation processes.

The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) is a living laboratory where we investigate the relationship between computer technology, human activity, and society. Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and create technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences. We research how people work, play, and communicate within groups, organizations, and social structures, then we design, create, and evaluate technologies and tools to support human and social activities.

Qualifications

This is an excellent opportunity for a postdoctoral fellow to learn more about design research approaches in HCI. Within this postdoctoral fellowship, there will also be opportunities to conduct research on the design and evaluation of human-AI systems that draw upon complementary abilities of humans and machines.

The ideal candidate for this position will have PhD-level research experience in human-computer interaction, responsible AI, and human-centered data science. Experience working in public sector and healthcare contexts is a plus.

Carnegie Mellon Univesity

Carnegie Mellon University challenges the curious and passionate to imagine and deliver work that matters.

A private, global research university, Carnegie Mellon stands among the world's most renowned educational institutions, and sets its own course. Start the journey here.

Over the past 10 years, more than 400 startups linked to CMU have raised more than $7 billion in follow-on funding. Those investment numbers are especially high because of the sheer size of Pittsburgh’s growing autonomous vehicles cluster – including Uber, Aurora, Waymo and Motional – all of which are here because of their strong ties to CMU.

With cutting-edge brain science, path-breaking performances, innovative startups, driverless cars, big data, big ambitions, Nobel and Turing prizes, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn't imagine the future, we create it.

Many seek Pittsburgh for being a hot spot for entrepreneurship and a model for future cities. Others come for the city's burgeoning food scene.
