Special Information

This is a full-time, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor position beginning August 2023. This academic year appointment is a teaching position fulfilling Ethnic Studies, diversity requirement and general studies program needs.

Job Description

The Ethnic Studies Program at Northern Arizona University seeks a full time Assistant Teaching Professor with the ability to teach courses focusing on Ethnic Studies undergraduate classes. This Assistant Teaching Professor position is a non-tenure eligible position subject to renewal, based on effective performance, department needs and continued funding. The Assistant Teaching Professor will focus on undergraduate courses which fulfill diversity requirements, general studies, and the Ethnic Studies Minor. The position includes the equivalent of a 4/4 teaching load with some flexibility to meet other program needs, research, and service duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. or doctorate degree in Ethnic Studies or one of its specializations: African American Studies, Chicano/Latino Studies, Asian American Studies, and Critical Race Studies or a related field with a focus on race and/or Ethnic Studies completed by August 2023.

Teaching experience in higher education is required.

Preferred Qualifications

We prefer candidates whose application portfolios include the following:

• at least one year of teaching experience in higher education
• evidence of teaching excellence in at least one, preferably Asian American Studies, or more of the following areas: Introduction to Ethnic Studies, Introduction to African American Studies, Introduction to Chicano/Latino Studies, Race and Ethnic Relations, Critical Race Theory, and/or Race, Identity and Film, a comparative focus and/or generalist in US Ethnic Studies
• evidence of scholarly research in an area of Ethnic Studies
• evidence of success in working with diverse communities and populations
• evidence of service and engagement related to promoting Ethnic Studies in local, national, or international contexts

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election.
