Job Description:

The Sexual Harm Acute Response & Empowerment (SHARE) Advocate provides advocacy-based counseling to students and collaborates to improve systems and responses in regards to sexual, gender and relationship harm (referred to henceforth as interpersonal violence) based on a model that identifies the interplay of power, privilege and oppression and seeks to address the roots of interpersonal violence. The advocate will work with a diverse and multidisciplinary team of colleagues in providing these services and collaborate across many departments. We are accepting applications on a rolling basis with review throughout March. Interviews will be conducted throughout April and early May with a potential start date in June.

Major Responsibility: Provide crisis intervention, risk assessment, and advocacy-based counseling and coordination of care to any student from the University (undergraduate, graduate, and medical) affected by interpersonal violence. (70%)

Supporting Actions:
  • Provide crisis intervention, risk assessment, and advocacy-based counseling to students affected by interpersonal violence occurring at any point in the lifespan including secondary survivors through on-call and acute responses, individual meetings and small-group sessions.

  • Utilize evidence-based practices and contemporary trauma theory to collaboratively support clients in managing distress related to interpersonal violence.

  • Assess for risk and assist with safety-planning, resource acquisition, and accountability-seeking for student survivors.

  • Serve students of diverse identities through culturally aware and responsive, developmentally appropriate approaches.

  • Regular participation in the crisis support system including daytime weekday, evening and weekend on-call duties for the Sexual Assault Response Line.

  • Provide coordination of care including criminal justice and legal referrals, housing and academic accommodations, mental health referrals, medical services coordination, Title IX referrals and other needs as they emerge.

  • Provide support through accompaniment to internal and external resources including criminal justice systems, medical services and other needs as they emerge.

  • Prepare confidential documentation and statistical reporting as needed following departmental standards, regulatory guidelines and trauma-informed practices.

Supporting Actions:
  • Participate in case review and improved response for survivors of interpersonal violence within BWell and Health & Wellness Services.

  • Collaborate with the Title IX Office on the University’s response related to interpersonal violence.

  • Participate in relationship-building and coalition work related to the University’s response to interpersonal violence and supporting student wellbeing.

  • Collaborate with community agencies, national professional organizations, and other colleges and universities.



Major Responsibility: Conduct education and outreach programs related to interpersonal violence response. (15%)

Supporting Actions:
  • Collaborate with BWell staff and University partners to develop and provide education and training related to interpersonal violence for students and student groups, including but not limited to students serving in paraprofessional roles within the university (Residential Peer Leaders, Meikeljohns, Peer Educators, etc.)

  • Provide training as needed for staff and faculty to ensure support for students related to this issue.

  • Act as a consultative resource for colleagues regarding their work related to interpersonal violence.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Active mental health clinical licensure by date of hire and/or eligible for license reciprocity in RI. (required)
    • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

    • Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)

    • Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)

    • Comparable licensure

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience preferred, can be inclusive of relevant graduate-level fieldwork experience

Job Competencies
  • Demonstrated understanding of the dynamics of interpersonal violence, trauma-based approaches to advocacy, and the ability to provide flexible support to primary and secondary survivors of interpersonal violence.

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality in complex, sensitive situations.

  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to conduct educational programs and training workshops.

  • Familiarity with restorative and anti-oppression theories and practices preferred.

  • Proficient computer skills; experience with use of electronic medical records preferred.

  • Commitment to working regular on-call shifts including nights and weekends.
