Summary:
The College of Lake County is seeking an Instructor, ABE/GED Reading for instruction of first and second year college level courses to a diverse student body during daytime, evening, and Saturday classes at our main campus, extension sites and local business and industry sites. The faculty member will develop, prepare, and revise instructional materials as well as participate in program evaluation and curriculum planning and development. The instructor will participate in department, division, and general faculty meetings, serve on division and college committees, and participate in other forms of college service. Instructors are required to maintain an active program of professional development related to institutional objectives. The instructor will utilize appropriate technology to deliver instructional materials, maintain grades, provide timely communications with students, etc. The instructor shall maintain appropriate office hours for student access. Maintains current knowledge of subject matter via professional organization membership, attendance of seminars, conferences and classes, and professional publications.

Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Adult Education, Community College Teaching OR Bachelor’s degree in one of the following: Adult Education, Reading, Developmental Education, Literacy, Math/Numeracy Education, OR Bachelor’s degree with an Elementary, Secondary, Special Education OR a Bachelor’s degree in Humanities -OR-Social Sciences -AND-Four years’ experience teaching basic skills (reading, writing, -AND-math) at a GLE below 9.0, to under-educated, at-risk, -AND-multicultural adult -OR-alternative high-school populations with an emphasis on teaching reading -AND-math.

National/State of IL Evidence Based Reading Instruction training desirable.

Experience teaching Reading, Math, and Basic Literacy skills to adult learners.

Experience teaching low-skilled adults with limited formal education.

Experience teaching in community sites with limited resources. Bi-lingual desired.

Special Instructions Summary: Application review will be ongoing. This position may remain open until filled. Applicants who will earn the required degree by May 31, 2023 will be considered.Applicants selected for an interview will be required to submit a minimum of two (2) letters of recommendation and a teaching portfolio.This is a full-time, tenure track faculty position. Salary placement is commensurate with education and experience. The minimum 2022-2023 academic year (Fall & Spring Semester) base salary range has not been determined. Optional contract for the summer session offers potential for significantly greater earnings.The minimum 2021 - 2022 academic year (Fall & Spring Semester) base salary range was $60,913 with a master’s degree to $77,349 with a doctorate in the subject field.Faculty may be assigned to any of the three CLC campuses; Grayslake, Lakeshore or Southlake. New faculty hires are required to attend orientation the week prior to the start date of August 14, 2023.Foreign Transcripts: Transcripts issued outside the United States require a course-by-course analysis with an equivalency statement from a certified transcript evaluation service verifying the degree equivalency to that of an accredited institution within the USA.

Pay Rate: Per faculty contract.

Total Hours Per Week: Fifteen (15) load hours and ten (10) office hours.

Work Schedule:
Varies according to course schedule. Ability to teach days, evening and weekends as determined by the needs of the program in any given semester. Ability to teach at all campus locations as needed (Grayslake, Lakeshore or Southlake).

Summary of Essential Functions:
Faculty members are expected to:

  • Select, prepare, and maintain current curriculum, course outlines, and printed and non-printed instructional materials. Revise and update course content as needed.
  • Provide instructional support to students by meeting with them outside of class if requested; be available for student consultation through phone, online/electronic communication, or appropriately established office hours; refer students, when appropriate, to sources of specialized services within the College.
  • Provide students and the Division an approved syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies in line with those of the college, texts and readings, assignments and deliverables, timelines and evaluation criteria, and any other information required by the College, Division, or Department.
  • Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, and/or examinations; provide feedback regularly and in a timely manner on student progress.
  • Deliver course content using a variety of teaching styles and provide interesting and engaging assignments that demonstrate the real-world applications of concepts covered.
  • Maintain office, discipline, grade, and division records as required by the College.
  • Use the appropriate College policies and procedures to resolve and document student complaints, concerns, and problems.
  • Ensure ADA compliance within classes assigned.
  • Assist in developing and administering discipline-appropriate measures of student academic achievement; use departmental assessment instruments as provided. Administer other assessments designed to measure student learning outcomes as requested and required by the department or college. Provide all results as requested.
  • Conduct all classes in accordance with an established and current course syllabus and approved textbook (and/or related instructional material). Meet all classes for the scheduled time. If unable to meet an assigned class, report absence to supervisor and division staff according to department procedures.
  • Submit all grades (mid-term/final) electronically prior to the required deadlines; provide the Registrar appropriate grade records.
  • Encourage students to submit course evaluations; review course evaluations when available and use feedback to improve course delivery.
  • Participates, when appropriate, in meetings of governance groups, College, division, and department committees. Attends faculty meetings, department meetings, and all other meetings called by authorized personnel. Attends Development Week activities and Commencement.
  • Maintains current knowledge of subject matter via professional development such as professional organization membership, attendance of seminars, conferences and classes, and professional publications.
  • Maintain a high level of professional ethics.
  • Remain current in compliance training including compliance under Title IX “Responsible Employee” and, if applicable, Clery Act Campus Security Authority.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
College: Knowledge of college policies, procedures, and practices; ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form; ability to perform all essential functions using safe work methods and following safety regulations relating to job; knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Department/Divisional: Knowledge of Instructional policies, procedures, and practices with the ability to answer work related questions; and/or interpret and apply these guidelines correctly in various situations; ability to solve issues and work with diverse population, work with large crowds; ability to read and interpret instructional documents.

DECISION-MAKING and ANALYTICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form; ability to interpret policy and establish methods and procedures for ability to perform all essential functions using safe work methods and following safety regulations relating to job; ability to organize and express ideas, directions, and data in a logical sequence to describe a process, or explain procedures such as how to perform a task to someone else.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Well-developed public speaking and presentation skills to effectively present materials to individual students or groups; well-developed written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively in a tactful and courteous manner with a variety of people, including students, employees, faculty, and the general public; ability to communicate effectively verbally and written to work with a diverse workforce and student population to prioritize and delegate projects, exchange ideas, information and opinions effectively with others to formulate policies and programs and/or arrive at decisions, conclusions or solutions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, other departments, students, and the public; ability to manage interpersonal conflict situations requiring tact, diplomacy and discretion.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a classroom setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, reach; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
