Postdoctoral Research Associate
About the Opportunity
Postdoctoral Research Associate: Cephalopod Biochemistry. The Biomaterials Design Group led by Leila Deravi in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Northeastern University seeks an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to work on unraveling the biochemistry underlying how cephalopods camouflage. The primary responsibility of the postdoc is to perform and communicate research, where the focus of the research will be to investigate which small molecules and proteins contribute to color and color change across multiple cephalopod species (cuttlefish and squid). The lab's focus is on understanding chromatophore organs but can extend to other optical organs in the skin. The candidate should have a strong background in protein chemistry including mass spectrometric preparations and bioinformatics and be familiar with optical analysis of living tissue (spectroscopy and microscopy) and materials design (biomimicry). A basic understanding and appreciation of marine biology and cephalopod biochemistry/physics will be required. The candidate should have an interest in managing highly collaborative research efforts with chemists, biologists, and engineers. It is expected that the postdoc will contribute to research grant proposals and reports, write manuscripts, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science/engineering or related field; strong technical expertise and demonstrated independence in the design and execution of experiments. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and proven track record of mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students
HOW TO APPLY
Applications should contain a cover letter briefly summarizing candidate's technical background and specific research interests, a full resume/CV with a publication list, Ph.D. completion date, and the names and contact information for three references who might be contacted for recommendations. Review of applications will begin immediately.
The appointment is for one year and may be extended pending regular progress evaluation.
