Job Description

The Writing Studio offers in-person and remote tutoring in writing, foundational mathematics,
and advanced statistics to undergraduate and graduate students with a specific focus on assisting
underserved populations (Hispanic/Latinx and low-income, including English language learners).
Through its holistic and research-based approach to tutoring, the Studio encourages lifelong
learning and is committed to students’ academic, personal, and professional development.

Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities
● Develops working relationships with graduate students for short- and long-term academic
projects

● Provides specific and holistic writing support with an emphasis on academic, personal,
and professional growth and lifelong learning skills
● Demonstrates the cultural competence needed to assist a diverse range of learners,
especially underserved student populations (Hispanic/Latinx, low-income, English
language learners, students with learning or physical difficulties)
● Communicates with the Writing Specialist regarding major or minor concerns, issues, and
challenges regarding individual student progress
● Provides tutoring summaries for completed sessions which address the following:
○ Course assignment/content area(s) of concern for which students need assistance
○ Recommendations given and strategies used during each tutoring session and the
student’s reception of tutor’s feedback
○ How the tutor assesses the student’s understanding of feedback and academic
progress (Examples: “Student was able to self-correct grammatical errors such as
sentence fragments” or “Student was able to synthesize evidence using credible
and relevant sources”)

● Complies with university policies regarding conduct and disclosure of sensitive
information including but not limited to the following:
○ Academic Dishonesty Policy (cheating/plagiarism)
○ Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act ( FERPA ) (confidential academic
student information)
○ Title IX Policy (discrimination and sexual harassment/misconduct)

Qualification Standards

Education

The employee in this position has attained at least a bachelor’s degree, provides writing
assistance to graduate students, and reports to the Writing Specialist.

Special Instructions to Applicants

This position requires frequent use of communication functions, including EAB Navigate and
Gmail, as well as use of software such as Microsoft Office. The position also requires
in-office/remote attendance. Communication availability during reasonable hours is expected.
The position requires frequent clerical skills such as typing and data entry ( EAB ). Intangible
skills required include problem solving, critical thinking, prioritization, multi-tasking, and
cultural competence. This position also requires the employee to be adaptable, resourceful,
flexible, dependable, and able to work as a team member.
