DESCRIPTION: Cal Poly Humboldt and the Department of Communication invite applicants for one or more full time temporary lecturer positions for academic year 2023/2024. Primary anticipated needs are teaching Fundamentals of Speech Communication, Speech and Debate, and working with incarcerated students. Candidates may be considered for other classes in the major if qualified. Initial appointment will be for the Fall 2023 semester. Subsequent reappointment for Spring 2024 and additional future terms are expected, but will be contingent upon satisfactory performance evaluation, budget, and programmatic need.

RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary placement is dependent on qualifications and experience. The salary schedule information for the Lecturer - Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:

Lecturer A $4,530 - $6,056

Lecturer B $5,405 - $11,994

Lecturer C $6,190 - $13,172

Lecturer D $7,794 - $13,797

Appointees are typically placed at the beginning of the range. The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salaries indicated in the schedules above are prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: An earned Ph.D. or equivalent in Communication or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred at the time of appointment. MA and ABD candidates will be considered.

Demonstrated teaching effectiveness is expected. Candidates with experience developing curriculum/courses/programs that inclusively serve a diverse student population and facilitate community growth are especially encouraged to apply.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:
  • Commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds;
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse students and colleagues;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse student population;
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to cross-cultural perspectives and experiences;
  • Potential for effective teaching or teaching experience using a variety of methodologies;
  • Experience and capacity for working with incarcerated / system impacted students.
  • Demonstrated experience directing or coaching a speech and debate team.

Working in the state of California is a condition of employment for this position. Even if part or all of an employee's assignment can be performed remotely, the employee must maintain a permanent residence in the state of California. The employee must be able to accept on-campus instruction, as assigned, and come to campus when needed.

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence. The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members in temporary positions are teaching, maintaining office hours and working collaboratively and productively with colleagues.

Depending on successful candidate's background and experience, instructional assignments may include: Speech and Debate, Fundamentals of Speech Communication; Introduction to Human Communication; Critical Listening and Thinking; American Public Discourse; Communication Research; Social Advocacy; Organizational Communication; Communication Theory, Digital Communication, Leadership Communication, Strategic Communication, Environment/Sustainability Communication, Rhetoric of Science, Health Communication, Food Studies, Critical Cultural Communication and Negotiation, Mediation and Crisis Communication.

Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students. Cal Poly Humboldt also continues to build unique and innovative learning opportunities for students, bridging the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. Cal Poly Humboldt is a leader in “place-based learning communities” that build relationships between students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the community. These communities incorporate environmental and social responsibility.

GENERAL INFORMATION: The Department of Communication is a robust major of approximately 100 majors at Cal Poly Humboldt with a dedicated faculty and engaged student body. We also teach the core oral-communication course required of all Cal Poly Humboldt Students. We have a single major and two minor options: Communication and Social Advocacy. The Department of Communication houses the Debate and Forensics team and the Communication Club. Cal Poly Humboldt sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi'ni (over in the woods). The Cal Poly Humboldt campus in Northern California is in close proximity to several thriving Native American tribes and communities. Cal Poly Humboldt currently has the largest percentage of Native American students in the CSU system and has over 30 Native American faculty and staff many from local area California Indian tribes. Cal Poly Humboldt is home to a number of leading Native American programs including the Indian Tribal Education and Personnel Program (ITEPP) and the Indian Natural Resource, Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP). There are also many opportunities at Cal Poly Humboldt to conduct research, teaching and community work on Native American history and cultures in Special Collections at the Cal Poly Humboldt library. The Humboldt Room in the Library has fantastic resources for tribally focused archive materials from the region.
