ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $5,167 - $6,084
  • However, offer amount will be commensurate with candidate's experience, education, skills, and training.

    POSITION PURPOSE: Under the general direction of the Director of Accounting and Reporting Services, the Accountant II performs a full range of professional accounting work and assists with the day-to-day accounting activities. The position performs intermediate-level professional accounting work requiring a comprehensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and governmental accounting standards. This includes independently completing account reconciliations, preparation of journal entries, inter-fund accounting, solving moderate to complex accounting issues, and some financial analysis. This position also maintains tax records and prepares tax returns, related schedules, and related reports as it relates to campus activities.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    General Accounting Duties
    • Analyze and reconcile bank statements, sub-ledgers, reports, and financial records.
    • Recommend and prepare adjustments, journal entries, reports, and expenditure transfers and chargebacks.
    • Analyze transactions for correct coding and assignment of revenues and expenditures.
    • Review expenditure transfers for appropriate authorizations, allowable legal accounting, completeness, and concise support documentation.
    • Review and reconcile due to/from accounts between campus and auxiliary organizations. Ensure all inter-company transactions are properly recorded in each respective entity on a timely basis.
    • Prepare miscellaneous reconciliations monthly for various balance sheet accounts.
    • Develop and maintain detailed schedules for capitalized assets, depreciation, and Construction/Work-in-Progress (CWIP).
    • Maintain and reconcile fixed asset management system to the general ledger. Ensure all fixed asset reporting to State Controller's Office is accurate by state fund.
    • Complete schedules for various funds and accounts for the annual audit.
    • Perform/assist with converting legal basis accounting records to GAAP basis financial statements.
    • Prepare GAAP financial statements, supporting schedules, and footnotes.
    • Maintain accurate financial records.
    • Provide training, guidance, and assistance to other professional and/or technical staff as needed.

    Tax Related Duties
    • Prepare monthly use-tax chargebacks for Pro-card purchases and complete filing of quarterly or annual sales and use tax returns for the university.
    • Compile and review data for the annual Unrelated Business Income tax return.
    • Prepare non-resident filing and Information reporting on Federal Form 1042 and State forms 592 and 592B for the university.
    • Coordinate all tax related reporting, requests for tax information, and correspondence for the university.

    Other Accounting Duties
    • Study, develop, and standardize procedures and policies to improve efficiency and ensure sound financial practices.
    • Provide service to customers by answering questions, providing information, making referrals, and assuring appropriate ugh and/or resolution.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with a major in accounting, business administration, finance or a closely related field and equivalent to two (2) years of progressively responsible ac experience OR a combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA's) –
    • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
    • Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) governmental accounting standards, office methods and procedures.
    • Ability to present statistical and mathematical data.
    • Advanced proficiency with current word processing and spreadsheet software programs, web browsers, query tools, integrated financial systems and/or other types of records management systems.
    • General knowledge of governmental legal-basis accounting and internal control methods and related laws, rules, and regulations.
    • Ability to prepare complex financial statements and reports.
    • Ability to understand and interpret laws and rules.
    • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply financial policies and procedures.
    • Ability to make decisions and recommendations regarding accounting activities using appropriate judgement and critical thinking.
    • Ability to convey technical information regarding accounting activities to non-Accountants.
    • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
    • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
    • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
    • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
    • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
    • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
    • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
    • Must be able to work occasional holidays and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
    • Master's Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or related field.
    • Two (2) years of prior tax experience in a CPA Accounting firm or other related accounting environment.
    • Experience with Fixed Asset Management system and/or PeopleSoft accounting environment.
    • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service centered attitude.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: SEDENTARY WORK – involves mainly sitting; minimal walking and standing; lifting light weight objects limited to 15 pounds.
