CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of Delaware is nationally recognized for its exceptional educational experiences and for integrating instruction, research, and public engagement. With 24 academic departments in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, more than 25 centers, programs, and institutes, and featuring outstanding research and teaching facilities, CAS serves over 7,500 students, is supported by approximately 400 staff, and maintains annual operating expenditures of over $121M. The College’s 600 faculty members emphasize the enduring value of an arts and sciences education and a deep commitment to excellence in scholarship and all forms of creative and intellectual expression, with sponsored research expenditures totaling more than $38.6M per fiscal year. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest and most complex academic unit on campus, offering more than 9080 undergraduate majors and over 80 undergraduate minors.

Under the limited direction of the Associate Dean for the Arts, the Sr. Assistant Dean takes an active role supporting secondary teacher education programs with a focus on research-based practices, reimagining secondary teacher education, and developing innovative pathways to secondary teacher education. The Sr. Assistant Dean serves as a resource for students, faculty, and staff with respect to academic planning, curriculum and certification options, and academic policies and procedures. The Sr. Assistant Dean works in collaboration with secondary education programs across the College, with the School of Education (SOE), the University Council on Teacher Education (UCTE), the Center for Excellence and Equity in Teacher Preparation (CEETP), and the State of Delaware Department of Education (DDOE).

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the development and implementation of the vision, mission, and strategic plan for short- and long-term development of secondary teacher education.
  • Appoint, oversee, and convene the Secondary Education Leadership Council on a regular basis.
  • Develop knowledge of educational policy and its implementation at national and state levels.
  • Lead the formation and implementation of best practice strategies to recruit, enroll, and retain secondary teacher education candidates, in tandem with CEETP efforts.
  • Develop and enact plans for inclusive excellence and the diversification of preservice teachers, faculty, and staff in secondary education.
  • Develop knowledge of programs nationwide to determine research-based best practices to proactively address challenges in secondary teacher education
  • Support secondary education SPA and CAEP accreditation efforts.
  • Support and supervise student teaching specialists in the areas of science, mathematics, and world languages.
  • Attend UD recruitment events (e.g., Blue and Golden Days and Decision Days).
  • Actively recruit in middle and high school programs.
  • Maintain and update the secondary education website, develop digital media, print, and other recruitment materials.
  • Represent secondary education on UCTE.
  • Participate on the UCTE Professional Education Conduct Board (PECB).
  • Liaise with DDOE and Delaware Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (DACTE).
  • Represent the College of Arts and Sciences on university, state, and national committees and task forces.
  • Actively seek out grant and other funding opportunities.
  • Advise Secondary Educators of Tomorrow (SET) student chapter.
  • Heighten awareness of secondary teacher education programs throughout the College of Arts and Sciences and University.
  • Participate in the UD Partnership for Public Education (PPE).
  • Manage annual budget.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in education or other related area and six years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Doctoral degree in education preferred.
  • Strong administrative, organizational, and management skills.
  • Ability to establish priorities for the development, planning, and implementation of short- and long-range goals.
  • Grounded understanding of academic disciplines, content standards, and curricular issues in secondary teacher education.
  • Demonstrated understanding and implementation of educational policy and education reform in Delaware and across the United States.
  • Understanding of research-based methodologies for the evaluation and improvement of secondary teacher education programs.
  • Ability to work in a collegial, effective way with individuals of varied backgrounds.
  • Ability to manage group dynamics, foster consensus building, and engage in conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated understanding of budgeting principles, fiscal management, and cost accounting for federal and non-federal funding, gifts, and grants preferred.
  • Ability to organize, utilize, and manage resources.
  • Strong grant development, writing, and reporting skills preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through spoken or written word.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Basic skills with computer applications.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.
