Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Finance team within the Division of Business Affairs supports the University’s mission, strategic vision, goals, and objectives by providing key financial services efficiently and effectively to students, the campus community, and federal, state, and other key university stakeholders. The Student Accounts and University Cashier Office creates, analyzes, analyzes, refunds, and reports on various financial transactions and supplemental data for student receivables and serves as the central depository for university revenue, including daily department receipts and student tuition, fees, and other charges. Student Accounts and University Cashiers Office are also responsible for processing all university student billing; student refunding; third-party billing’ student and non-student collection activities; campus department feeds; title IV financial aid accounting, reporting, and related drawdowns; and month-end fiscal year-end closing.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Lead Cashier is the subject matter expert for the two Cashiers Specialists, including but not limited to in-depth knowledge of UNCW and Department of State Treasury policies and procedures, Banner Finance and Student AR module, NCFS, reporting tools, and other outside systems. This position is responsible for training the cashier staff and providing support to the departments for deposit transmittals of payment processing. Verification, submission, and return of electronic files to Bank Of America for student refunds and return checks. Accurate and timely reconciliation of deposit transmittals and the daily DCA . They are also responsible for assisting with system and subsystem upgrades and enhancements testing.

This position also is responsible for certifying all inbound transfers, Contract Payments, and returns in NCFS accurately and timely daily. Researching outstanding inbound wires to determine what department the funds should be deposited to. The Lead Cashier has interaction with all university departments, outside vendors, and other state agencies such as Bank of America, the Department of State Treasurer, Wells Fargo, and other institutions. This position is the primary backup for the Assistant Director of University Cashiers position.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma/ GED, and three years of experience which includes accounting work. Two-year degree in business administration or accounting.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience
  • Four-year degree in business administration or accounting; two-year degree in business administration or accounting and one year of experience. Or an equivalent level of combination of training and experience
  • Four years of banking and/or cash handling experience, preferably in higher ed
  • Experience with Banner or similar ERP or Oracle application
  • Two years of customer service experience
  • The ability to multi-task in a high volume/fast-paced environment
  • The ability to research and resolve student account inquiries in a timely manner
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
  • Experience creating and evaluating accounting transactions
