Job Description Summary:
The Associate Dean is a key advisor on issues and initiatives regarding student recruitment and outreach, holistic admission, and the student experience in their initial contact with SMU.

The Associate Dean leads the divisional partnerships with students, faculty, staff, and community partners in the development and implementation of initiatives to recruit a diverse student population. The Associate Dean demonstrates an understanding and commitment to diversity inclusion and educational equity.

The Associate Dean will lead local, statewide, and national recruitment efforts for the College of Nursing, College of Health Science, and the California School of Podiatric Medicine. The Associate Dean will participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the strategic vision and plan for the Office of Admission.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties and Accountabilities:
  • The Associate Dean collaborates with Academic Program Leadership in the design, implementation, and assessment of Holistic admission practices.
  • Collaborates with faculty and students to plan, develop, organize, and execute strategies for recruiting and admitting students, with a focus on the recruitment and retention of students from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Provides direction to faculty and professional admissions staff responsible for conducting admissions application reviews.
  • Support/collaborate with university and community partners to create and support student pipeline programs.
  • Manage and collaborate on programs that are essential to recruiting efforts: President’s Ambassador, FACES, Mentors in Medicine, and Nursing workforce development.
  • Assists in the management of budgets allocated recruitment and yield efforts.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of Holistic admission practices, and advising, and make changes to the program to provide better service to students, faculty, staff, and leadership.
  • Participate in department and division meetings for project planning, policy development, and direction setting.
  • Represent SMU and the Admission Office in a variety of forums on campus, off campus, and virtually.
  • Supervise Admission Counselors and Student workers.
Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience working in a college admission office
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends
  • Working knowledge of CRM databases.
Knowledge of:
  • Diversity training, and Holistic admission practices.
  • Budgeting.
  • Principles and practices of Higher education administration, supervision, and training.
  • Diverse academic, socioeconomic, disability, linguistic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds of university students.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Effective communication skills and Interpersonal skills.
  • Budgetary management.
  • Ability to present to large audiences and to communicate one-on-one compellingly and authentically.
  • Ability to take appropriate steps to promote and sustain effective working relationships within diverse multiethnic communities.
  • Ability to understand the needs of a diverse population, including students of color.
  • Ability to engage and work in collaboration.
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff.

Pay Range:

$76,640.00-$99,635.00

Samuel Merritt University currently provides base salary ranges for all positions-on job advertisements-in the United States based on local requirements. Individual compensation will ultimately be determined based on a variety of relevant factors including but-not limited to qualifications, geographic location, and other relevant skills.
