The Department of Criminal Justice at Tarleton State University invites applicants for Department Head
effective September 1, 2023. Primarily responsible for the teaching/learning process and will also
participate in the necessary operations of the institution. Work hours: Mon-Fri; 8 AM-5 PM or as work
and teaching requirements indicate. Must be able to work/teach remotely at the request of the
University.

Responsibilities
50% Faculty Responsibility:
Teaching 15 hours per academic year. Participate in scholarly and research activity; Maintain
professional involvement in professional criminal justice activities and organizations; Attend official
university functions; Participate in curriculum development; Participate in evaluative activities of the
program; Participate in student organizational activities; Advise students.


25% Program Responsibility:
Formulation and coordination of the process of program evaluation including goal assessment, student
learning outcomes, and programmatic/student assessment. Continuous monitoring of the curriculum to
ensure compliance with any State and Federal regulations, including the Higher Education Coordinating
Board, and with the general trends in the academic field of Criminal Justice. Serving on program and
departmental committees as requested. Development of, and participation in, recruiting and orienting
activities for transfer and beginning students; Ensuring the requirements of TCOLE are met; Monitoring
of all aspects of the program to ensure compliance with TCOLE evaluative standards. Assure all program
components, including off-campus, provide a quality education; Primary liaison with the community for
the purpose of program development; Responsible for the course and curriculum development,
revision, and catalog updates; Facilitate degree planning for undergraduates. Maintain the online
database for the Criminal Justice Program, including assessment, measurements, objectives, and
strategies. Maintain and grow the undergraduate and graduate criminal justice programs in terms of the
number of majors in the undergraduate Program and in the number of graduate students enrolled in the
graduate program. - Maintain campus, program sequences for all degrees at all campuses. Manage
staffing of the student organizations with Criminal Justice faculty to produce solid student organizations;
Performs other duties as assigned.


25% Administrative Responsibility:
Participation in the recruitment, hiring, training, supervising, and termination of faculty and staff within
the Criminal Justice Program only by making recommendations to the Associate Dean, including making
recommendations on tenure, promotion, salary increases, and any other personnel needs as
determined by the Associate Dean. Develop course schedules and negotiate teaching workloads;
Manage staffing, particularly regarding student advisement. Attend meetings as requested by the
Associate Dean. Maintain a connection with the Graduate Council by supplying a regular program
representative and dissemination of meeting results to the Associate Dean and all graduate faculty.
Hiring and supervising of program adjuncts at all campus locations. Make recommendations to Associate
Dean, when asked regarding the expenditure of Instructional Equipment funds, as well as the Criminal
Justice accounts.

Education and Experience
Faculty in the rank of Professor shall hold the earned doctorate degree in Criminology and/or Criminal
Justice from a university recognized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The rank of
professor is appropriate for an individual who has made significant academic contributions to the body
of knowledge in the field of criminology and criminal justice. Further, the professor’s academic work is
expected to have been referenced in the academic literature.
Normally have completed at least ten years of college teaching and pertinent professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated teaching excellence, scholarly/creative attainment, and professional achievement both
within and outside the University.
