DEFINITION
Under the direction of the Child Development Center Director, assist in providing appropriate and quality instructional, social, and physical activities for children within an assigned age group; participate in planning, organizing, and implementing the assigned program; and assist to ensure a safe and pleasant learning environment for children.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from an assigned supervisor.
EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILTIES AND DUTIES
Responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Develop and implement appropriate early childhood development curriculum including effective learning activities and lessons for assigned children in a specific age group; prepare related instructional materials.
Knowledge of:
- Basic operations and services of a child development center.
- General principles, techniques, theories and practices of early childhood education and child development including proper redirection and care.
- Child guidance principles and practices.
- Basic instructional methods and techniques.
- Basic computer skills including Excel and database searches
- Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
- Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations governing child care and development centers.
- Assist in the preparation of effective and interesting curriculum for children within the assigned age group.
- Monitor and oversee the activities of children.
- Ensure a cheerful and safe learning environment for children.
- Observe health and safety regulations.
- Work independently, think critically and problem solve.
- Apply knowledge, practices, and procedures of Early Childhood Education.
- Learn, interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Sensitivity to, understanding of, and the ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.
- Physical conditioning to ensure a safe environment for children; occasional moderate lifting and carrying requirements; frequent standing and walking.
Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by successful completion of a minimum of12 college level units with a grade “C” or better in early childhood education and/or child development courses.
Experience:
One year of teaching experience in a child development center.
Licenses/Special Requirements:
Incumbents must have a current Child Development Associate Teacher permit or higher issued by the State of California Teaching Commission . Must be able to obtain current CPR/First Aid(EMSA)within first month of hiring
