Job Description

Provide care for animals that are of high value as they represent a genetic resource for the community of researchers funded by the National Institute of Health. These animals are at multiple locations across campus and must maintain biosecurity at these various locations. In addition to care of the animals, accurate record keeping and support to the research and teaching efforts at the National Swine Resource and Research Center are essential.

Duties include feed and care of swine, assist with surgeries, C-Sections, embryo transfers, etc. estrous detection, semen collection and artificial insemination, administer medications, keep accurate records of all activities, observes animals for any signs of adverse health conditions, euthanizes animals and disposes of them in compliance with Federal laws, prepare animals for experimentation, collect samples from live or morbid animals, and other duties and responsibilities may be expected in order to support the mission and purpose of the research and the University of Missouri.

Salary

Salary Range: $15.75 - $27.42 hourly

GGS Grade: 007

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

One year of experience in animal care activities or sufficient experience as animal technician trainee is required. Must be able to handle and work with animals and recognize abnormalities in animals' behavior. Must be able to administer routine diets and medications without direct supervision. Employees working within this classification will be required to wear appropriate safety equipment and apparel. Depending on the nature of the work, the incumbent may be required to wear a respirator and/or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as outlined in the Industrial Standard for Respirator Use.
