Statement of Job:

The University of Southern Maine’s School of Business is seeking two part-time faculty members to co-teach a course in landscape design for our Summer 2023 session, July 17-28.

We are seeking a student-focused instructors who will have full responsibility for course delivery and grading. The course to be taught is The Complete City, Summer of Spatial Design (ART 199).

The Complete City: Summer of Spatial Design is a two-week intensive that introduces students to the fundamentals of spatial thinking. Learning from architects, landscape architects, and urban designers, students will develop foundational, analog skills on how to observe, analyze, and create in context. Students will be immersed in studio culture and practice by doing, supplemented by site and firm visits, and ending with a final group project with presentations and critiques. Students will learn to see the world differently. This course is designed by a local multi-disciplinary team through the Portland Society for Architecture and the Boston Society for Landscape Architecture.

This position requires art and design faculty capable of teaching concepts and skills in landscape architecture, design, and spatial thinking. Faculty should be prepared to introduce students to the foundational introductory skills of these interdisciplinary studies. Students will also develop awareness of the creative process, studio critique, project management, and presentation skills. Faculty should be prepared to work with both art majors and non-majors as well as nontraditional students.

Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior college teaching experience. In addition, USM employees can use their USM Card to access the library, Cigna Employee Assistance Plan, and fitness center (s). USM also offers part-time faculty the opportunity for development frequently through our Center for Collaboration and Development (CCD) and the chance to get an online teaching certification and training through CTEL, in addition to other developmental opportunities open to all staff throughout the year.

Qualifications:
  • MFA or equivalent degree
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching at a university level in content related landscape design and architecture.
  • Knowledge and skill of design concepts, tools, and processes
  • Active professional creative practice
  • Ability to address work and ideas across disciplines.
