The Executive Director of Athletics provides overall administration of the athletic program, and is responsible for the overall economic, academic, and competitive success of the program using high-impact practices in student development, leadership, and mentorship. Responsible for promoting and sustaining a collegial, respectful, and high-performing work environment for all employees.
The Executive Director ensures compliance with applicable National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA), Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA), athletic conferences, and College rules and procedures governing all facets of intercollegiate athletics programs. The Executive Director supervises a staff of athletic coaches, professional and support personnel, develops and manages operating budgets for the intercollegiate athletics program, and participates in fund-raising activities as appropriate.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
• Provide continual development and administration of the athletic program, including compliance.
• Plan and oversee athletic department budgets and cultivate external financial support.
• Represent athletic department at institutional, community, state, and national meetings.
• Gather, compile, and prepare data for College, State and National compliance information including; academic progress, equity, retention, graduation, and success rates of student-athletes.
• Ensures that the College's intercollegiate athletics program achieves the parallel goals of development of quality, competitive athletics teams and support of the individual educational goals of student-athletes through management of the personnel, budgetary, facility, and equipment resources available to the athletics program, development of policies and procedures designed to assure achievement of internally and externally established goals and objectives, and continuous evaluation of individual and unit performances toward achievement of those goals and objectives.
• Ensures compliance with National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA), Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA), applicable athletic conferences, and College rules and regulations, particularly those regarding financial aid and student eligibility to participate in intercollegiate athletics, by delegating compliance responsibilities to the Assistant Director of Athletics.
• Provides leadership in the recruitment effort for the College's intercollegiate athletics program and ensures compliance with institutional, FCSAA, and NJCAA rules and regulations governing the recruitment of student-athletes.
• Supports the success of student-athletes by engendering a philosophy which promotes the positive development of the individual and the team and establishes an environment conducive to both, maintaining an accessibility for student-athletes whether for athletic or academic matters, providing opportunities for academic assistance to student-athletes if required, and monitoring the academic progress of participating student-athletes.
• Promotes student-athlete growth and positive community relations through service opportunities that allow student-athletes to demonstrate their leadership skills while giving back to the community.
• Develops a schedule of intercollegiate athletics contests which supports a schedule that includes an appropriate balance of home and away games and that required facilities (i.e., fields, courts, arenas) are available to support the schedule. Oversees athletic facilities, events, and game day management.
• Advises the College President and senior administrative officers on issues relating to intercollegiate athletics, its trends, problems and other pertinent matters by making reports, recommendations, presentations, findings and preparing other correspondence as required or directed.
• Leads with ethics and integrity, a spirit of kindness, and promotes a culture of positivity. Develops a competent and effective coaching staff that share a positive, student-centered coaching philosophy. Encourages professional development through participation in coaching decisions and recruiting activities, and evaluates and provides assessments of their performance.
• Manages funds by supervising the business operation of the athletics program, planning and developing an annual budget for the intercollegiate athletics program which includes equipment, facility, training or related resource needs, performing budget reconciliations, and exercising final authority over departmental expenditures.
• Ensures that the quality and quantity of medical care available to student-athletes is appropriate for the particular activity being conducted by providing the Athletic Trainer with guidance and direction regarding such matters as athletic insurance coverage, coordination with physicians to ensure proper care and supervision during athletic events and/or training sessions, maintenance of medical rehabilitation equipment, and the student athletic trainer program.
• Facilitates charitable giving by donors thus enhancing the College's ability to meet established athletic fund-raising goals by assisting with the planning, coordination and supervision of fund-raising events and promotional activities for intercollegiate athletics. Coordinates all fundraising activities with the LSSC Foundation, Inc., and ensures compliance with all fundraising policies and procedures.
• Promotes a positive image of the College and its intercollegiate athletics program by working cooperatively with the commissioners of the various athletic conferences, leagues, FCSAA, and the NJCAA, participating in community and professional organizations, assisting with alumni functions throughout various cities and states, and representing the College, as a spokesperson for intercollegiate athletics, at professional meetings and on professional and community committees.
• Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required by the President.
• Contributes to the overall success of the intercollegiate athletics program by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the President.
• Master’s Degree in Education, Physical Education, Sports Management, or related field from an accredited institution required.
• 5 years’ experience in intercollegiate athletic administration and 3-years coaching experience required.
• At least five years of experience in athletics administration is required, preferably at a National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) athletic program.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
• Demonstrated knowledge of NJCAA rules and regulations governing recruitment, player eligibility and related functions is required. Substantial budgetary experience is required.
• Coaching experience at the collegiate level is preferred.
• Proficient with MS Office, Adobe, Microsoft Teams, banner, LOIS, Skype, and Canvas.
• Basic computer and technology skills, including the use of social media platforms.
• Intermediate ability to navigate and utilize the NJCAA Connect web application and electronic documenting.
• Basic knowledge/understanding of ADA and standard liability practices and procedures.
• Ability to communicate FCSAA and NJCAA policies and bylaws with departmental staff, registrar and financial aid director.
• Ability to have a basic understanding of Title IX and Gender Equity requirements.
• Understanding of creating and managing operational budgets.
• Advanced understanding of preparation and completion of Intercollegiate Athletics EADA and Title IX reporting and compliance
• Understanding of facility and grounds maintenance and repair requirements.
• Ability to monitor, approve, and distribute athletic scholarships.
• Ability to communicate with external sources/constituents for financial support of intercollegiate athletics.
• Experience with fundraising events, social events, and sports camps.
• Knowledge of FCSAA and NJCAA policies and bylaws.
• Ability to communicate, collaborate and assist with campus student activities.
• The scope of the position frequently requires weekend and evening work and requires overnight, out-of-town travel.
