Basic Function:
Under the overall direction of the Program Director and the editorial oversight of the News Director, the On-air Host/Producer is responsible for providing local broadcast continuity in NPR News magazines and other programs. The position reports and produces newscast stories for daily broadcast, responds to news emergencies during shift, reads live underwriting, promotional announcements, weather forecasts, traffic reports, and other announcements as required. In addition, the selected candidate will have lead responsibility for the production of a new, weekly KCLU current events program. Once the program has launched, the On-air Host/Producer will work closely with the show host and Program Director to formulate program ideas and concepts for each episode. The selected candidate will research program topics as well as find, screen and book guests, produce promos, and maintain digital and social media content for the program.

Representative Duties:
  • Execution of local breaks within NPR’s news programs. E
  • Generates properly timed, crisply-written newscasts that reflect KCLU’s editorial guidelines and priorities as overseen by station’s News Director. E
  • Responds to breaking news situations and conveys timely information to the listener. E
  • Writes and/or voices news reports for use in local news blocks. E
  • Mixes own board and interacts with station’s automation system. E
  • Serves as Announcer on Duty and alerts appropriate station staff to operational anomalies. E
  • Maintains program log, monitors Emergency Alert System (EAS) activity, and carries out tasks and responsibilities required by FCC. E
  • Operates broadcast equipment and associated software. E
  • Lead preparation and production of a weekly talk show: Research and determine show topics; Contact, screen, and book guests; Plan, research, and script segments to ensure the host is fully prepared with interview questions and context; Screen calls (if applicable) and communicate with the team during production. E
  • Work with the Digital Producer to contribute program-related content to the KCLU website and promote via its social media channels. E
  • Create audio and text billboards and promos for the weekly program. E

Knowledge Of:
  • News writing fundamentals that create newscasts that are consistent with public radio’s commitment to fairness, balance, clarity and thoroughness
  • News gathering techniques
  • Digital audio production and editing
  • Broadcast mixing consoles and digital playback systems
  • Current events and issues, particularly in Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties
  • Public radio’s style of presentation
  • FCC rules and regulations
  • Adobe Audition or similar digital audio software
  • On-Air broadcast mixing


Ability To:
  • Efficiently gather and write newscasts and spot news reports
  • Conduct thorough research and interviews, assess news and make editorial judgments
  • Provide energetic but conversational and credible on-air delivery for newscasts and station breaks, which are timed to the second and complement national programming
  • Record newscasts and other continuity elements for subsequent broadcast
  • Use a wide variety of software and interfaces to create text, audio and online content
  • Attend periodic aircheck and editorial review sessions with Program Director and News Director
  • Participate in station on-air fundraising
  • Serve as a substitute host for other programs
  • Write news copy on deadline that is clear, accurate and conversational
  • Research and determine topics for a weekly public affairs program
  • Book guests and generate creative segment/program ideas
  • Collaborate with various personalities
  • Stay calm during live, fast-paced “breaking news” events
  • Work independently and on deadline


Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination equivalent to: A high school diploma or equivalent and four years of professional experience in broadcasting/digital media in an on-air position. Experience producing or assisting in the production of a news/public affairs program for radio or television.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Experience in daily journalism
  • Understanding of Enco broadcast automation systems
  • Experience operating a variety of broadcast equipment including audio boards, digital editing systems (e.g. Adobe Audition), and other production equipment.
  • Experience as a host in an NPR News magazine program and advanced understanding of how to optimize program flow.
