Job Description:

Empire State University Office of Student Success Initiatives seeks 4 full-time Student Success Coordinators (State Title: Senior Staff Assistant) at one of the university's locations in New York City, Rochester, Saratoga or Selden. Reporting to the Director of Student Success Initiatives, the Student Success Coordinator is responsible for services dedicated to supporting, engaging and retaining students as well as responding to student concerns, including appeals and grievances. In order to facilitate the best possible educational experience so that students can achieve their goals, the Student Success Coordinators support lifelong learning by collaborating with each other, faculty and other key stakeholders to advocate and advance student success and retention. 

Student Success Coordinators are key contributors to retention efforts and assist with student issues/coaching, including managing a caseload of students, with an emphasis on orienting to the institution and first term proactive programming and individual development sessions. They also assist with targeted and data-driven outreach to support enrollment and persistence, as well as issue resolution related to academics or services during student pathways to degree completion. 

Student Success Coordinators promote student engagement by participating in the planning and delivering of university wide virtual workshops as well as local in-person events. They are part of a team that produces the Student Success Newsletter, contributes to social media, and maintains a virtual first term community in the university's LMS, Brightspace.

The selected incumbent must be knowledgeable about student services at the university level and should have familiarity with working with adult and nontraditional students in both face-to-face and online learning environments, with the ability to support individuals of diverse cultural, social, and religious backgrounds, and varied age, gender, and sexual orientation. The selected incumbent will collaborate with a large Student Success team, faculty, academic administrators, and key functional offices to provide high quality services to students across all of SUNY Empire. This position requires dedication to utilizing holistic student development and support approaches through different modalities of service delivery to provide an excellent student support and engagement experience.

Student Success Coordinators manage a caseload of students with the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide outreach, coaching, support, resources and referrals as needed to support student success.
  • Assist students in navigating academic policies and procedures, provide technical support, and policy interpretation.
  • Process and manage service grievances, academic appeals, and academic integrity issues. Assist students and faculty with problem-solving assistance to resolve concerns.
  • Utilize university technology systems to find relevant information, document work and ensure consistent communication and processes. Maintain complete records of all student situations in relevant databases.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and other departments to advocate for students based on individual and time-sensitive needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respectful communication when dealing with students and colleagues around sensitive academic issues.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to excellence, innovation, integrity, diversity, and student success.

Student Success Coordinators support student engagement and retention by:

  • Developing and hosting virtual and in-person student programming and engagement.
  • Supporting regional activities, events and relationships as needed to enhance student engagement and retention.
  • Monitoring and analyzing data in order to identify retention gaps and design effective intervention strategies.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in student services/student affairs.
  • Strong interpersonal and excellent customer service skills, and the ability to work effectively with students, the public, the university community and external constituencies.
  • Evidence of ability to communicate, engage and develop rapport with individuals of diverse cultural, social, and religious backgrounds, and varied age, gender, and sexual orientation.
  • Ability to analyze, mediate, and resolve complex problems.
  • Initiative, creativity and the ability to function well in an environment that promotes both teamwork and independence.
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff and administration from multiple departments.
  • Demonstration of professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to empathize with students in need of academic and non-academic support.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Counseling or related area preferred.
  • Experience working collaboratively as part of a multi-person team to provide student services and support resources to students.
  • Experience with Ellucian's Banner, CRM systems or other data management and communication technology.
  • Experience with adult or non-traditional students.

Special Information:

  • This position can be based in Rochester, Saratoga Springs, New York City or Selden, NY
  • Occasional travel may be required
  • Some evening and weekend hours may be required
