The Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola University Chicago (LUC) invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track position in the Writing Program with expertise in teaching first-year writing and the rhetorics of digital and multimodal writing. We are a congenial, collaborative program, housed on Loyola’s beautiful lakeside campus. The position is renewable contingent on performance and review. For more information about the Writing Program, please visit our website at www.luc.edu/writingprogram/; for information about the English Department, visit www.luc.edu/english.

Located on Chicago’s vibrantly multicultural North Side, LUC is committed to creating an inclusive, responsive community of faculty, students, and staff. As an urban-based Department of English is dedicated to mentoring a diverse student body, many of whom come from under-represented and under-served populations, we especially encourage applications from candidates from under-represented groups. We also encourage applications from educators committed to interdisciplinarity (i.e., working with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines). This search is part of a university-wide, multiyear hiring initiative designed to hire outstanding researchers and teachers who are reflective of our diverse student body. Of special interest are candidates who can further the University’s efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Duties and Responsibilities: Full-time faculty in the Writing Program teach four courses per semester in Writing and Core Literature. Course assignments are based on the needs of the Department of English and the Writing Program but typically involve first year writing, advanced writing, and introductory literature courses. Faculty also engage in service at the program and department levels.

Qualifications: PhD in English or a closely related field by May 2023, with three years’ demonstrated excellence teaching first-year writing and experience teaching digital and multimodal rhetorics. Other preferred areas of expertise include anti-racist pedagogy, social justice rhetoric/writing, and public writing. Candidates should demonstrate responsiveness toward and understanding of diverse student backgrounds. They must be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic education.

Instructions to Applicants: Applicants should submit to http://www.careers.luc.edu (1) a cover letter addressing qualifications for the position criteria outlined above; (2) a current Curriculum Vitae; (3) a statement of teaching philosophy; and (4) a statement addressing past or potential contributions to engaging a diverse community through teaching and service. References will not be contacted immediately but may be consulted at subsequent points in the review process. Please direct inquiries to Melissa Bradshaw, Director of the Writing Program (mbradshaw@luc.edu).

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Applications received before April 7 will receive full consideration.

Loyola University Chicago is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer with a strong commitment to hiring for our mission and diversifying our faculty. The University seeks to increase the diversity of its professoriate, workforce and undergraduate and graduate student populations because broad diversity – including a wide range of individuals who contribute to a robust academic environment – is critical to achieving the University’s mission of excellence in education, research, educational access and services in an increasingly diverse society. Therefore, in holistically accessing the many qualifications of each applicant, we would factor favorably an individual’s record of conduct that includes experience with an array of diverse perspectives, as well as a wide variety of different educational, research or other work activities. Among other qualifications, we would also factor favorably experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to an academic career or degrees.

As a Jesuit Catholic institution of higher education, we seek candidates who will contribute to our strategic plan to deliver a transformative education in the Jesuit tradition. To learn more about LUC’s mission, candidates should consult our website at www.luc.edu/mission. For information about the university’s focus on transformative education, they should consult our website at www.luc.edu/transformativeed.
