Duties and Responsibilities:

The Office of Central Advising is accepting applications for a full-time Advisor position. This position will report to the Director of Central Advising and will be responsible for providing personal, career, and academic counseling to assigned student populations. Initially, this position will advise Computer Science students. This position will also assist with departmental and campus-wide enrollment and retention initiatives.

The candidate selected for this position will be responsible for the following:

Advising/Coaching (80%)
  • Provide personal, career, and/or academic counseling to assigned student population
  • Advocate for and intervene on behalf of students, when necessary
  • Advise students individually and/or in groups regarding core curriculum and/or major requirements, class selection, academic policies and procedures, and campus resources
  • Assist students with identification of long term goals and career plans
  • Create and maintain case notes, student records, reviews, and related documents
  • Work closely with faculty, staff, and student success personnel to ensure assigned student populations are successful in their degree programs
  • Serve on committees as needed
  • Other assigned duties as required or deemed necessary to meet academic advising goals within assigned scope of responsibility
Enrollment and Retention Support (20%)
  • Assist with enrollment and retention initiatives, including call and email campaigns
  • Represent the Office of Central Advising at on-campus and off-campus enrollment/retention events, such as New Student Orientation, AUM Road Trips, and AUM College Nights
  • Prepare a variety of reports using Banner, Argos, CRM Advise, and other campus-wide databases
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of applicable University practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of scope, guidelines, and operation of departmental or unit program
  • Knowledge of basic word processing software and the ability to operate standard PC/PC software applications, including Microsoft Office suite
  • Knowledge of general office procedures
  • Knowledge of record-keeping procedures
  • Knowledge of assigned department forms, rules, etc.
  • Knowledge of student success strategies
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to advise students
  • Ability to tutor students
  • Ability to create training materials
  • Ability to effectively teach a variety of topics
  • Ability to respond to several demands at one time in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to maintain records and safeguard confidential information
  • Ability to work with individuals from various backgrounds
Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Computer Science, Liberal Arts, or related academic field and 2 years of experience working in an academic environment or counseling role.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree and experience in academic or career advising in higher education. General knowledge of degrees located within AUM’s College of Sciences and College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
