Job Summary

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) within the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for a full-time System Administrator to join the Technical Services group. The System Administrator plays a key role in developing and managing information technology systems at NSIDC. You will join a group of professionals that help maintain essential IT operations, such as operating systems, monitoring tools, business applications, functional servers, email systems, laptops, desktops, productivity software, and related hardware. Success in this role means you can support computer systems in a mixed operating system environment and work efficiently with internal technology providers as well as other operations groups.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Monitor computer systems; proactively address or escalate issues before service is impacted.
  • Apply knowledge of Linux, MacOS, MS Windows and related systems to maintain and enhance science data operations.
  • Install and configure new hardware components for operations in an enterprise data center environment.
  • Maintain server back-ups and disaster recovery initiatives. Including data restores as needed.
  • Maintain security best practices as needed.
  • Conduct research on IT products and services in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • General network infrastructure administration.
  • Monitor the Jira help request system and provide desktop support.

  • This is an on-site position with the option for a hybrid work modality. CIRES and NSIDC are currently supporting a high degree of work location flexibility. Hybrid work arrangements will follow current CIRES and university guidance and policies.

What We Can Offer
  • We can offer a competitive salary, commensurate with experience, along with a generous benefits package.
  • The pay range for this full-time position is $62,000 - $88,500 per year. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
  • Relocation expenses are available for this position following CIRES and the University of Colorado’s relocation processes and procedures.

What We Require
  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 1 year of relevant experience as a system administrator.

What You Will Need
  • Experience providing system administration for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS operating systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with staff; software developers, data management operators, customer/user representatives, and office administrators.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, to include resources, priorities, and timelines.
  • Customer service orientation toward problem solving and troubleshooting
  • Ability to be self-directed; to take ownership of issues and inefficiencies and be proactive about seeking better solutions.

  • 2-3 years of relevant experience as a system administrator.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies such as VMware/vSphere.
  • Experience with container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with deployment and configuration management tools – Ex. Vagrant, Docker, Puppet, Ansible.
  • Experience with system monitoring tools – Ex. Prometheus, Nagios, Cacti.
