Job Description

The Department of Physics at Syracuse University is seeking applicants in the field of soft matter and/or biological physics, with priority interest in topics that align and build on the current expertise at Syracuse, including mechanical metamaterials and experimental cell biophysics. The opening is for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor to start in Fall 2023. Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in physics, biophysics, or a related field. We are interested in candidates who have the communication skills and cross-cultural abilities to effectively interact with diverse groups of students, colleagues, and community members. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an excellent research program, teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and participate in departmental service. Candidates from groups historically excluded in physics and/or experience in mentoring students from these groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

This position is part of an ambitious Invest Syracuse Cluster Hire Initiative in BioInspired science and technology. As an integral part of this investment, Syracuse University is actively recruiting multiple candidates for tenured/tenure-track faculty positions in targeted focus areas, including smart materials and mechanics of development and disease. Faculty hired into this position will build on our existing strengths in these focus areas and affiliate with our multidisciplinary BioInspired Institute for Material and Living Systems that spans multiple departments in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Faculty hired into the BioInspired Institute cluster will gain access to the Institute’s tenure track faculty mentoring network, internal funding opportunities, and public outreach resources. Additionally, graduate student and postdoctoral trainees may participate in our extensive Professional Development Program. Further information on the Institute and hiring initiative can be found at https://bioinspired.syr.edu .
For full consideration, qualified candidates must complete an online application at www.sujobopps.com (#076650), which requests a cover letter, curriculum vitae, list of publications, the contact information for three referees, research statement, teaching statement, and a diversity statement. The diversity statement should address the ways in which the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility are incorporated within teaching, scholarship, and/or service. All applications will be held in strict confidence. Syracuse University is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the excellence of the academic community. The Physics Department is interested in candidates who have demonstrated commitment to excellence by providing leadership in teaching, research, or service toward building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. Women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans are encouraged to apply. We are pleased to speak with interested applicants ahead of submitting materials. We will begin screening applicants immediately and continue until the positions are filled; applications received before November 8th will receive priority consideration. For additional information, please contact the chair of the search committee, Professor Lisa Manning.
