- Ability to assess, assign, delegate, and complete custodial work assignments schedule per departmental standards.
- Ability to perform all custodial duties to assist subordinate staff.
- Ability to lift, push, pull and carry items weighing up to 30 lbs,
- Provide positive customer service.
- Ability to provide clear and concise communication, both written and oral.
- Skill in organizing and tracking custodial materials and equipment.
- Experience supervising custodial staff members.
- Experience working in a higher education environment
- Supervisor experience training and evaluating staff members.
- Experience working in student housing facilities.
- Experience with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Bilingual, English & Spanish
The Head Custodian position provides leadership, coordination, and supervision of custodial operations at Texas State Housing Facilities to ensure a clean, safe, and sanitized environment. The head custodian supervises approximately 5-8 full-time staff that service student residential facilities.
Job Duties
Custodial Supervision (60%)
- Provide direct supervision of custodial staff members and perform various cleaning duties within an assigned area.
- Ensure that assigned facilities are maintained in a sanitary, safe condition.
- Develop building work schedules encompassing daily, weekly, quarterly, semester, and annual events.
- Provide leadership and develop a positive custodial team that takes pride in their work and their assigned facilities’ conditions.
- Complete and maintain documentation of staff performance evaluations, commendations, discipline, training, inspection, safety reports, materials inventory, work orders, timekeeping, and implementation of department and university policy and procedures.
- Submit monthly key inventories for assigned keys and submit a report to the custodial crew supervisor.
- Submit supply and equipment requests for facilities in the assigned areas to the custodial crew supervisor.
- Maintained equipment inventory and preventative maintenance records for assigned equipment.
- Assist with hiring, training, and supervision of assigned full-time and student staff.
- Meet the custodial crew supervisor regularly to discuss staff and facility issues.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Serve as on-call and essential personnel, which requires occasional irregular work hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays and emergency closures, to meet the department’s and the university’s needs.
- Maintain rapport with and meet custodial needs of residence hall staff and students.
- Meet monthly with residence directors to inspect facilities and identify areas of concern.
- Attend weekly custodial and department team meetings.
