Position Details

Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job

The Department of Mass Communication at Sam Houston State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in film and media studies. Area of specialization is open. However, preference will be given to popular media scholars with an exceptional publication record.

The ideal candidate must have a desire and ability to:
  • take on significant mentorship roles (graduate thesis project advising, independent study project advising, etc.);
  • take on significant roles in helping build a creative community (mentoring, helping organize student film festivals, advising with official student media channels, advising student organizations, etc.);
  • take on significant roles in curriculum development at the undergraduate and graduate level;
  • take on significant roles of service and leadership;
  • author and deliver courses online;
The Department of Mass Communication at Sam Houston State University serves more than 500 students studying journalism, broadcast production, public relations, advertising, and film. Located in the Dan Rather Communications Building, it is home to 90.5 The Kat, Channel 7, Bearkat Student Media, The Houstonian, and the annual Heatwave Media and Film Festival. Educational Requirements for the Position

The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Film or Media Studies or a related field.

ABD candidates must have completed their terminal degree by the time of appointment.

Experience Required for the Position

Desirable experience qualifications include:
• a record of publications in the area of film and media studies
• a record of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level
• a record of excellence in online pedagogy
