The Resident Director is responsible for the complete supervision of a residence hall complex, comprised of 1-2 buildings and 400-600 students. This includes supervision of 10-30 student employees, an administrative assistant, and up to one graduate assistant. This position participates in the selection and training of Resident Directors, Graduate Assistants, 93+ Resident Assistants and Desk Assistants in order to create a campus community that is conducive to student success. The Resident Director serves as a first responders for matter of safety and student crisis. This position provides and oversees student activities, student conduct matters, educational efforts, and administrative duties. The Resident Director is a key coordinator in the retention, progression, and graduation of students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Staff Supervision and Development

Recruit, interview, train, and supervise 10-30 student staff within assigned complex; train and supervise at least one full time support staff; conduct individual meetings, staff meetings, and regular evaluations; provide positive feedback and motivation as well as hold staff accountable; provide & participate in ongoing training and staff development; during summer months, assume responsibilities for camps, conferences, summer school and/or special projects, these responsibilities could include, but are not limited to, staff supervision, scheduling, room preparation, coordinating with campus and community stakeholders, and other customer service functions.

Student Development and Education

Oversee implementation of residential curriculum and educational strategies within assigned apartment complex and among highly diverse residents; provide, and participate in the assessment of, programs and educational strategies within complex, participate and support department wide initiatives; supervise residential learning community activities within residence hall complex and pattern with residential learning community Program Coordinator; mediate conflicts between roommates and residents; inform residents of departmental and student code of conduct policies; enforce and report policy violations; perform conduct hearing for minor violations and adjudicate sanctions; keep track of conduct cases using the conduct database system; respond to emergency or crisis situations; participate in on call duty rotation (including holidays); manage after-hours loaner keys and building swipe access, as appropriate; monitor and maintain security procedures for residence halls; serve as a resource to, and advocate for, students for questions and concerns related to college life, and refer appropriately.

Administrative Responsibilities

Responsible for all administrative functions within assigned residence hall to include, but not limited to; coordinate complex health and safety inspections, coordinate staff payroll, audit key inventory, and oversee mail distribution; maintain office hours and respond to student, parent and stakeholder needs by being visible and available; coordinate the check-in and check-out processes; assist in room change process and room selection; conduct weekly inspections of facilities and follow-up, as appropriate; attend residence life staff, departmental, and divisional meetings; co-chair & serve on departmental committees and special projects; collaborate with other departments and offices; participate in selection and training of new professional staff.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions.
  • Ability to diffuse and respond effectively to crisis situations as well as react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to train and supervise others.
  • Ability to observe and detect unusual occurrences and policy violations.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and techniques.

Minimum Qualifications: Requires a Bachelor’s degree; 1 year of experience in Housing & Residence Life (Resident Assistant or related) or Student Affairs (Admissions, Orientation, or related.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field; 2 years of experience as a Housing graduate assistant; experience in recruiting, selecting, training, and supervising student staff; experience working with residential curriculum.
