Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Director of G&C, this position will be responsible for proactively monitoring financial post-award areas of concern, providing training to the research administration community, and contributing to process improvement and policy interpretation. A core component of this position will be working collaboratively with the G&C Team Managers & Accountants, Controller’s Office, Division of Sponsored Programs, Office of the Vice President for Research & Innovation, various departments/colleges/units within the University, and other Commonwealth institutions.

Essential Duties
  • Responsible for Agency Risk Management and Internal Control Standard (ARMICS) testing and documentation for G&C
  • Serve in intermediary capacity for accountant vacancies
  • Actively contribute to the development of tools and dashboards for financial aspect of sponsored programs
  • Develop an annual or bi-annual sponsored research fiscal compliance review plan
  • Develop an annual or bi-annual plan for Subrecipient monitoring of high risk partnerships
  • Present findings and issue formal recommendations in written reports to senior management
  • Develop monitoring reports and practices to aid in ensuring data integrity and financial compliance over sponsored awards
  • Access, review, and analyze financial data records and information pertaining to the financial management of sponsored research awards
  • Participate in University committees and cross-departmental working groups & initiatives
  • Primary liaison between G&C and internal and external auditors, including drafting, reviewing and implementing management plans when necessary
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement of policy, procedure, and workflow
  • Develop and implement training resources to the VCU research administration community
  • Engage in continuous learning and professional development
  • Review and approve cost transfer requests
  • Review annual compliance notices and audit plans for sponsors
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and a minimum of 3 years of audit or research administration experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Cost Accounting Standards, OMB Uniform Guidance, and applicable federal and state regulations
  • Advanced data analysis and experience with data/statistical software (e.g., Excel, SAS, SPSS, etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Internal candidate with extensive understanding of sponsored programs pipeline and stakeholders on campus
  • Certified Research Administrator (CRA) or Certified Financial Research Administrator (CFRA)
  • Demonstrated experience with policy development, system implementations, and business process improvements
  • Audit and/or Compliance professional background
  • Experience with Ellucian Banner financial systems
Salary Range: Commensurate with experience, up to $83,100
