Position Summary

Under general supervision of the my.SDSU Training & Support Manager, the my.SDSU Training, Support & Communications Specialist is a member of the IT Division (ITD) within the User Services area. This position will contribute to faculty support programs and projects, interact daily with ITD service units, and work with SDSU faculty, staff and administrators as required.

My.SDSU is the official online portal for student admissions, student records, financial aid, and more. The my.SDSU Training, Support, & Communications specialist will be responsible for project implementation, providing user support and training, creating multimedia development and more.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego. This position is scheduled to work three days on campus and two days from the telecommuting site. However, the schedule may vary based on operational needs.

Department Summary

The mission of the Information Technology Division is to develop the long-term infrastructure, services, and strategy necessary to support the University's mission of learning, discovery, and engagement. The IT Division has the stewardship responsibility for core IT assets on campus and the obligation to provide the services, training, and community building necessary to realize the benefits of those investments across the San Diego State University community.

IT User Services (ITUS) is responsible for the operation and technical support of Google Workspace including campus email and calendar, SDSUid, ServiceNow, Zoom, software licensing\distribution, application support\development, SSO azure application integrations, electronic document signing, and wireless troubleshooting. Computer support for general assignment classrooms, campus units and other clients of ITD are also provided by ITUS.

Education and Experience

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Information Technology Consultant, depending on the nature of the position assignment, may include working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.

Key Qualifications
  • Master's degree in educational technology or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty in instructional design for online/hybrid courses or multimedia classrooms.
  • Minimum of two years' experience designing and developing online courses using learning management systems, or two years of related instructional design experience in higher education and training.
  • Four or more years of experience providing academic technology support in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of best practices in technology applications in teaching and learning and in the delivery of academic technology support services.
  • Knowledge of trends and future directions of technology in the learning environment.

Licenses/Certifications Required

Valid California driver's license is required. Defensive driving course, as specified by the CSU Office of Risk Management, must be completed as soon as possible after beginning employment.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $7,084 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,678 - $11,547 per month.
