Minimum Qualifications
  • MLS / MLIS degree from an ALA -accredited program.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working at a library and supervising employee(s).
  • Demonstrated strong communication (written and oral), organizational, customer service, and presentation skills.
  • Experience providing research assistance in a library setting.
  • Proficient in Google Workplace, Microsoft Office, Adobe, and web conferencing programs.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Competent computer and technical problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy.
  • Commitment to the Department’s mission and goals.
License/Certification Required

Valid driver’s license.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Hickory Librarian is an integral part of the University Libraries team and will work collaboratively with the Libraries departments and necessary university partners to assist in the planning and development of Hickory Library and Information Commons facilities, operations, and library services.

The Hickory Librarian supports the instructional and research activities of the Appalachian State University Hickory campus to enhance the educational experience of the students and promote learning.

Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:
  • Oversees the library’s public service desk, answers questions, provides research assistance, and performs circulation functions for students, faculty, staff, and public patrons in person, online, and by telephone.
  • Implements and promotes University Libraries’ public service policies, procedures, and activities at the Hickory Library and Information Commons.
  • Promotes library resources, services, and programs using the University Libraries communications plan and by providing tours and orientations of the Hickory Library and Information Commons.
  • Supports Hickory library collection development and maintenance. Assesses the library collections regularly.
  • Facilitates face-to-face and online library instruction sessions with faculty librarians. Refers to the appropriate subject expert librarian for specialized and in-depth services.
  • Partners with Central IT staff to coordinate technology service and support in the Hickory Library and Information Commons to fulfill the faculty and students’ technological needs. Maintains good communication to support the effective use of technology.
  • Maintains responsible stewardship of the Hickory Campus Library budget. Manages procurement and purchasing process for the library.
  • Supervises and trains student workers, interns, and volunteers to ensure effective use and student focus. This position will supervise future library staff members at the Hickory Campus.
  • Provides information needed for the assessment for Appalachian State University’s Institutional Research, Assessment and Planning department and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges accreditation standards for the Hickory Library.
  • Supports and contributes to the mission of Appalachian State University and University Libraries initiatives.
  • Works with the Coordinator of the Special Collections Research Center to ensure the security, safety, and retrieval of archival materials at the Libraries offsite storage facility located in the North Carolina Center for Engineering Technology building, a short-distance from the Hickory Campus.
  • Collaborates with Hickory Campus constituents to ensure the maintenance, safety, and security of the library and information commons facilities.
  • Pursues continuing education and professional development activities to strengthen individual competencies, improve library operations, and contribute to the academic success of students.
  • The Position requires availability for frequent travel to the Boone campus, and may need some evenings and weekends work.
  • Completes other duties as assigned by the Dean of the University Libraries.
Suggested Salary Range
$61,000 - $70,000 (The final salary amount will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience)

Special Instructions to Applicants

This position is an in-person position that reports primarily to the Hickory Campus. Travel to Boone for training and other events will be required as needed.
