We are seeking anAcquisition Technician. The Acquisitions Technician position acquires monographic titles in print, microform, and nonbook formats, such as electronic books and DVDs, as requested for the Johns Hopkins University academic community. The position also evaluates, edits, and loads bibliographic records in batch using a variety of software and automation tools.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Orders print and electronic monographic titles in a variety of formats from publishers, book jobbers, auction houses, and private book sellers.
  • Establishes purchase orders in the Libraries Integrated Library Systems (Horizon) Acquisitions module including adding special handling instructions to orders as appropriate.
  • Establishes standing orders for monographic series with organizations, publishers, or other vendors.
  • Investigates out-of-print suppliers for titles no longer published and when possible, obtains out-of-print titles from these suppliers.
  • Investigates publisher/vendor purchasing options to ensure that the library obtains the best price for purchases balanced with timely delivery of materials.
  • Order, track and reconcile procurement card purchases.
  • Evaluates vendor bibliographic records and utilizes software to batch edit vendor files in order to create online purchase order records as well as to update the bibliographic description to conform to local bibliographic control practices prior to their load into the catalog.
  • Collaborates with the Library Applications Group Library Specialist, and Head of Technical Services and Resource Acquisitions Coordinator to develop customized imports of various vendors, OCLC bibliographic catalog records, as well as authority records.
  • Monitors routine batch load reports generated by online catalog software and identifies record load problems and makes recommendations for their solution.
  • Evaluates bibliographic data to ensure accurate description of the purchased titles.
  • Merges duplicate online catalog records incorporating appropriate data from bibliographic, holdings, and item records to be reflected on remaining record.
  • Undertakes special projects as assigned.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Experience designing or implementing data automation solutions; familiarity with at least one Western or non-Western European language; MARCEdit experience; copy cataloging experience, LC Classification experience.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Three years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
