Located in Greater Boston, MassBay is a comprehensive, open-access community college offering associate degrees and certificate programs on three campuses in Wellesley Hills, Framingham, and Ashland, Massachusetts.

Position Summary:

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for teaching and promoting success among a diverse student population. Faculty members are responsible for developing educational and evaluation materials consistent with the philosophy and framework of the program, MassBay Community College, Board of Registration in Nursing (BORN) and Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) requirements. The faculty member is responsible for maintaining a current Massachusetts Registered Nursing license and expertise in their nursing specialty.

This person will effectively work with regulatory policies, accreditation standards and College/Union requirements for the effective management of the Practical Nursing program.

Under the direction of the Assistant Dean of Nursing, the Program Chair will work closely with program faculty to ensure the program curriculum is in accordance with college, state, and national accreditation criteria and policies. They will coordinate all program activities supporting student success measures of completion, placement, and licensure. These activities include student and program outcomes development, budget development and management, continuous quality improvement activities, curriculum development and review, and maintaining student records. Primary responsibilities include participation in classroom instruction and the development of and evaluation of courses across the Practical Nursing curricula; supervision of students in the clinical, laboratory and simulation settings; and academic advising.

This person will adhere to faculty and program chair responsibilities in accordance with regulations set forth by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing (MABORN), and standards set forth by the Accreditation Commission of Nursing Education (ACEN) standards.


Key Responsibilities and Duties:

The list includes but is not limited to the following:
  • Prepare syllabi and course materials, including writing, vetting, evaluating and participating in item analysis;
  • Assign, supervise, and evaluate students in the clinical setting. Plan clinical experiences for, provide supervision of, and appropriately evaluate and document student delivery of safe nursing care to an individual or group of individuals;
  • Actively participate in the development and implementation of a written systematic plan of evaluation of all components of the nursing program, including the assessment of graduate student learning outcomes and nursing competencies;
  • Actively participate in the assessment of course and program learning outcomes (student achievement) in accordance with MA BORN and ACEN standards;
  • Collaborate with faculty to collect, analyze, and utilize appropriate data to evaluate and revise course and program student learning outcomes;
  • Collaborate with faculty to develop/revise curricula based upon evidence (curriculum plan);
  • Collaborate with faculty to develop and revise program policies that are consistent with parent institution with differences justified based on program goals;
  • Collaborate with faculty to determine suitable and comprehensive instructional material, textbooks, clinical sites, and library acquisitions and other learning resources;
  • Demonstrate proficiency in technological skills in classroom and clinical settings (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite, online learning platform/Blackboard, electronic health records) and the ability to use technology effectively to communicate with students and colleagues and to enhance classroom learning as appropriate;
  • Engage in professional development activities to maintain excellence and expertise in classroom/clinical/simulation teaching and the discipline of nursing;
  • Practice cultural competence;
  • Carry out other related duties as assigned.
Key Responsibilities and Duties – Department Chair

Each semester the Department Chair will undertake responsibilities and duties commensurate with those stated in Article 20.06 of the MCCC Collective Bargaining Agreement. (https://mccc-union.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/69/2020/05/MCCC_BHE_Day_Contract_2018-2021-final.pdf)

The department chair (program) may be responsible for the following duties:
  • Assist in the recruitment and orientation of new instructional staff;
  • Advise on the instructional competency of all applicants for vacant positions within the program after consultation with members of the program unit;
  • Submit the preferred subject matter preparation and class schedule of unit members within the department chair’s program consistent with Article XII;
  • Supervise the development of instructional materials and assist in conducting research on the effectiveness of the instructional program consistent with the philosophy and objectives of the College, the requirements of external and/or regulatory agencies and Article VII of this Agreement;
  • Instruct courses or portions thereof within the program as appropriate;
  • Assist in the implementation of the following evaluation processes as contained in Article XIII:
  1. The process of evaluation of course materials.
  2. The process for classroom observation in a clinical or laboratory–like setting wherein the student is developing a variety of occupational and/or pre-professional skills fundamental to the students' performance after completion of designated programs. The Department Chair (program) shall not implement the process for evaluation by students nor the process for classroom observation where didactic instruction is involved.
  • Encourage faculty to develop new methods of instruction;
  • Develop and prepare for submission all reports and accreditation materials required by governing or accrediting agencies;
  • Participate in the formulation of the program's budget and administer it within the prescribed limits established by the College;
  • Evaluate and make recommendations for any employees not in the faculty/professional staff unit assigned to the department chair’s program area;
  • Cooperate with the President of the College or the President’s designee in the development, dissemination and implementation of Board of Higher Education/College policy, regulations and procedures;
  • Meet with the Advisory Committees which support or influence the instructional program in cooperation with the department chair’s supervisor. Establish liaison and cooperation with external agencies essential to the implementation of the program particularly where use of external facilities or resource personnel is required;
  • Cooperate and facilitate cooperation with other program areas and/or departments, learning resources, student services and administrative services within the College;
  • The designated administrator shall implement all evaluation processes for the department chairperson and the coordinator, if said coordinator does not report to a department chair. If the coordinator reports to a department chair, the process for the evaluation of course materials shall be performed by the department chair;
  • Other duties may be assigned if specifically contained in a job description and such duties are consistent with the needs of the College and the provisions of this Article;
  • The department chair (program) shall be responsible for the total implementation of a college program and/or curriculum defined as a series of diverse courses usually leading to a certificate of associate degree and which require multiple faculty in order to provide core courses and where accreditation, licensure or other external governing agencies require a member defined within the unit to perform supervisory functions for approval, maintenance or continuance of the program

Required Qualifications:
  • Hold a current unencumbered Massachusetts RN License, or able to obtain;
  • Possess an earned master’s degree in Nursing (MSN);
  • Possess a minimum of three years full-time experience in nursing, or its equivalent, within the last five years;
  • Previous academic teaching experience in the college setting and/or clinical teaching experience;
  • Must maintain expertise appropriate to teaching responsibilities;
  • Must maintain current health and immunizations for clinical clearance;
  • Must maintain Health Care Provider CPR level appropriate to teaching responsibilities;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to use a personal computer and associated peripherals and current version of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office, Internet, and alternative delivery systems (e.g., internet and interactive video) at a proficient level.

Additional Information:


Salary Range: Salary Range: $68,000 - $70,000, in accordance with one's education and experience as dictated by the collective bargaining agreement classification compensation structure.
