The internationally recognized University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) is a 10-megawatt nuclear research facility and the most powerful research reactor located on the Mizzou campus. MURR is a campus research center which operates under the Division of Research, Innovation & Impact .

MURR is the highest-power university research reactor in the United States, operating at 10 megawatts, 6.5 days a week and 52 weeks a year. The MURR facility enables research across many disciplines – From investigating ancient cultures and how plants respond to their environment, to analyzing industrial materials and developing radiopharmaceuticals that have lifesaving clinical applications, the MURR facility is a reliable resource for researchers, scientists, engineers and students across the country.

Job Description

Health Physics Technician I – Irradiation/Hot Cell Operations

The successful candidate will serve as a member of the MU Research Reactor (MURR) Hot Cell and Irradiations Team. This position is responsible for pre- and post-irradiation sample processing at MURR. This involves preparing customer samples and associated paperwork for irradiation, and transporting and processing radioactive samples using shielded equipment and telemanipulators after irradiation at MURR. Samples include those for research purposes, life-saving radioisotopes for medical use, and isotopes for industrial applications. Some of the duties the candidate will be responsible for are:
  • Operate manual lifts, fork lifts, cranes, hydraulic tables and elevators in a safe manner.
  • Complete all paperwork accurately with attention to detail.
  • Calculate anticipated radioactivity of samples being loaded.
  • Operate TIG welder and laser engraver.
  • Operate electric hand tools and some machine shop equipment.
  • Transport shielded casks containing radioisotopes to and from hot cells.
  • Coordinate with other work groups to ensure samples reach their appropriate destination.
  • Routine cleaning and organizing of work areas.
Hours: Generally weekdays Monday through Friday. Periodic early morning, evening, and weekend work is required due to isotope processing and shipping schedules. This position does include work schedule flexibility and shift differential.

MURR Hot Cell and Irradiations team operate every week of the year including holidays.

Shift

Work processes begin early in the morning each day and are subject to change: Mondays begin at 2:30am and Wednesdays begin at 4:30am. The remaining days begin at 7am. The schedule rotates such that approximately half of the staff work the early rotation each week. This position does include work schedule flexibility and shift differential.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent and the ability to lift 50 lbs. is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with radioactive material.
