Job Description:

DIVISION: Academic

UNIT: DiMenna-Nyselius Library

BASIC FUNCTION: Provides research and technology support to students, faculty and staff. Provides information literacy instruction. Creates and maintains web-based and print instructional resources. Develops, implements, promotes, and assesses activities aimed at improving student engagement and success at Fairfield Bellarmine. Participates in the Library’s Faculty Partnership program (FPP) as a librarian partner to Fairfield Bellarmine Faculty.

UNUSUAL WORK CONDITIONS: Physical requirements: mobility; must be able to lift materials off shelf. Requires some evening and weekend hours.

EDUCATION: Graduate degree in Library & Information Science (MLS or equivalent) from an ALA accredited program, second Master’s degree in a related field is preferred or equivalent related experience.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE: Recent experience or course work in information literacy, instruction, and research services. Evidence of a service-oriented approach to working with students and faculty. Evidence of potential in teaching. Interest in outreach and promotion of library services. Ability to communicate technical information to nontechnical users; Working knowledge of Apple and Windows platforms including keyboard and stylus; Working knowledge of Android and IOS mobile operating systems; Working knowledge of common software applications; Working knowledge of browsers, Network connectivity and Wi-Fi; Basic understanding of virtual applications/Desktop (Apporto); Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office. Demonstrated ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences. Must be results-oriented, flexible, self-motivated, and have an enthusiasm for teaching, and an ability to collaborate with colleagues in a goal-oriented library team. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Desire to work with students from lower-income backgrounds to ensure their success in higher education. Understanding and appreciation of the Jesuit mission and values within higher education.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Spanish proficiency and experience working with under-represented populations.

REPORTS TO: Associate Dean for Public Services & Coordinator of the Academic Commons Partnership

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Provides research support to students, faculty, and staff. This includes:
  • providing in-person and online research assistance,

  • aiding in the assessment of research services,

  • aiding in the development of departmental policies and procedures,

  • creating online research guides and tutorials,

  • collaborating with main-campus research and access services staff

  • collaborating with other academic support units at Fairfield Bellarmine and main-campus.

2. Provides technology support to students, faculty, and staff. This includes:
  • troubleshooting and resolving basic computer/iPad and Wi-Fi issues,

  • assisting with registering devices to the University network,

  • working with Tier 2 support on Fairfield campus to resolve issues.

3. Provides information literacy instruction. This includes:
  • working with the Instruction Coordinator to develop information literacy initiatives,

  • conducting library instruction classes, orientations, and workshops that provide guidance on research methods and resources to students, faculty, and staff,

  • collaborating with the Instruction Coordinator and other teaching librarians on instruction-related needs assessment,

  • working with the Instruction Coordinator to promote the library’s participation in learning management systems (LMS).

4. Creates and maintains web-based and print instructional resources. This includes:
  • creating and updating online tutorials and other electronic teaching tools,

  • preparing research guides, course guides, and other materials to support the information needs of students and faculty,

  • adhering to best-practices for design of research and course guides.

5. Works with Outreach Librarians in the development, implementation, promotion, and assessment of activities aimed at improving student engagement and success at Fairfield Bellarmine. This includes:
  • working collaboratively with campus partners, student groups, and library colleagues to develop programs and tools that support undergraduate retention and success,

  • planning and coordinating special events,

  • marketing library services, collections, instructional programs, resources, and events through a variety of channels, formats, and modalities.

  • maintaining library signage.

  • creating rotating temporary resource displays, with potential collaboration from library staff and other campus organizations.

6. Participates in the Library’s Faculty Partnership program (FPP) as a librarian partner to Fairfield Bellarmine Faculty. This includes:
  • building and maintaining professional, collaborative relationships with faculty,

  • developing an understanding of faculty teaching and research needs,

  • conducting information literacy sessions and assessing student learning outcomes,

  • working with the Collection Strategies Librarian to develop and assess collections,

  • collaborating with colleagues to create services and programs that support student learning, and faculty research and teaching,

  • promoting library services and resources to faculty,

  • attending meetings, events and learning opportunities hosted by academic departments.

7. Participates in the growth, development and professional work of the Library. This includes:
  • embodying the mission and values of the Library and the University in our everyday work life,

  • communicating effectively with supervisor concerning pertinent Library and/or University matters,

  • assisting in the discussion and formulation of policies and procedures,

  • keeping current with developments in job responsibilities,

  • acting as a responsible participant in staff, committee, and/or task force meetings,

  • attending and participating in Library and University events,

  • monitoring developments in librarianship through attendance at meetings and workshops, membership in professional associations, and the reading of professional literature,

  • promoting and communicating the value of the Library to the community.

8. Performs such other duties, responsibilities, and activities as required by supervisor and as departmental/University needs indicate.

Overview:

Fairfield Bellarmine is a new two-year Associates degree program located at the new Bridgeport, CT campus which seeks to offer a rigorous liberal arts education in an area currently underserved by higher education opportunities by offering small class sizes and individualized advising. The curriculum will include core classes steeped in the humanities, as is traditional in Jesuit higher education, as well as majors in the professional fields of engineering, health studies, business, and liberal arts. Students who graduate from this program will matriculate into four-year degree programs at Fairfield or elsewhere, or enter directly into the professions. While at Fairfield Bellarmine, students will enjoy extensive support services, including career advising, counseling, food service, technology support, and campus ministry.
