Job Description:

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Egan School Clinical Program Accessibility Coordinator will focus on supporting, and coordinating clinical, and simulation educational accessibility for students in the Egan School Fairfield CT and Austin TX campuses with identified disability issues. This position reports to the Dean of the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies with support from the University Office of Accessibility, A key responsibility is working directly with students who are seeking accommodations, from undertaking initial intakes to serving as a case manager for those who are registered with the Office of Accessibility. The Egan School Clinical Program Accessibility Coordinator works collaboratively with the Egan School and Accessibility teams to ensure student appropriate support services. Further, the position requires working with students, faculty and staff, to insure that appropriate accessibility policies, procedures and processes are upheld.

UNUSUAL WORK CONDITIONS:

Some evening and weekend hours required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL NEEDED:

Strong verbal and written communications skills are required, as well as excellent interpersonal skills, detail orientation and computer proficiency. Experience working with vulnerable student populations and their parents/guardians, knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the impact of these laws on accommodations for students with disabilities, and the interactive accommodation request process for clinical education are highly preferred.

EDUCATION:

A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, Higher Education Administration or related field is required. A Master-level degree in a related field is preferred; however, commensurate professional background/experience may be considered in lieu of the advanced degree.

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of 1-3 years of direct experience working with students with physical, sensory, learning, psychological and/or other disabilities in a higher education, k-12 or clinical setting. The candidate should be knowledgeable of various disabilities and accommodations in higher education and best practices regarding implementing accommodations.

REPORTS TO:

The Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies, with a dotted line to the Director of the University Office of Accessibility

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Facilitate student intake for accommodations.

  • Engage in interactive accommodation request process for clinical education experiences.

  • Manage existing student cases, including meeting with students, insuring all documentation is in place, providing necessary guidance and support (e.g., time management and/or organization skills; behavioral approaches for increasing likelihood of academic success) and acting as an advocate for students when accommodations are needed to be put in place.

  • Participate in Egan School and Office of Accessibility meetings, as well as represent accessibility on committees when needed.

  • Design/Disseminate information on new policies and procedures for accessibility; research best practices in disability support in higher education, including finding grant programs and identifying current research on the topic.

  • Work with part-time staff, including work-study students and graduate assistants to assist in supporting students with disabilities.

  • Represent the Egan School and Office of Accessibility via courteous, efficient and professional behavior; uphold the utmost respect for student/family privacy and confidentiality.

  • Collaborate or partner with Egan faculty regarding accessibility and accommodations to enhance student experiences

  • Assure inclusive environments to enhance learning experiences for individuals with disabilities

  • Other duties as needed/assigned.
