Position Details
Wesleyan University’s Department of Religion invites applications for a one-year full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Religion, beginning on September 1, 2023. The position is for one year and is renewable for a second year depending on performance and the curricular needs of the department. We invite applications from candidates specializing in the Indigenous traditions of Africa, South America, Oceania, and/or Australia. We particularly encourage applications from scholars whose work focuses on questions of the intersections of religion with race, gender, and/or ecology. Historical period and methodological approach are open. Priority will be given to applicants whose areas of expertise do not duplicate existing departmental strengths. The teaching load is 3/2, in person on Wesleyan’s campus. Wesleyan is a highly selective liberal arts college, with a strong and diverse undergraduate student body, that values both scholarship and teaching very highly.
Minimum Qualifications
PhD in Religious Studies or related field in hand by time of appointment, no later than Sept. 1, 2023 OR Ph.D. in Religious Studies or related field in hand by the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Professor; a successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, but will complete the Ph.D. in Religious Studies or related field within one year of hire.
Special Instructions To Applicants
You will be asked to upload electronic versions of the items we require, which are: (1) cover letter, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) writing sample, (4) statement of current research, and documentation of teaching experience, including (5) teaching statement, (6) course syllabi, and (7) student evaluations. In the cover letter, candidates should describe how they will embrace the college’s commitment to fostering an inclusive community, as well as their experience working with individuals from historically marginalized or underserved groups.
You will also be asked to provide the email addresses of three referees from whom we may obtain confidential letters of recommendation (please double-check the accuracy of the email addresses of the referees you name to ensure that you have the most up-to-date email addresses for each one).
After you have submitted all of the required documents, you will see a confirmation number. At that point, each of your referees whose email addresses you have provided will receive an automatically-generated email requesting that he or she submit a letter of reference for you.
Additional Information
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Those completed by April 17th, 2023 will receive full consideration. Please contact Sheri Dursin, Administrative Assistant for Religion, at sdursin@wesleyan.edu or 860-685-2288 if you have questions about the application process.
