Position Details

Wesleyan University’s Department of Religion invites applications for a one-year full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Religion, beginning on September 1, 2023. The position is for one year and is renewable for a second year depending on performance and the curricular needs of the department. We invite applications from candidates specializing in the Indigenous traditions of Africa, South America, Oceania, and/or Australia. We particularly encourage applications from scholars whose work focuses on questions of the intersections of religion with race, gender, and/or ecology. Historical period and methodological approach are open. Priority will be given to applicants whose areas of expertise do not duplicate existing departmental strengths. The teaching load is 3/2, in person on Wesleyan’s campus. Wesleyan is a highly selective liberal arts college, with a strong and diverse undergraduate student body, that values both scholarship and teaching very highly.
Minimum Qualifications

PhD in Religious Studies or related field in hand by time of appointment, no later than Sept. 1, 2023 OR Ph.D. in Religious Studies or related field in hand by the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Professor; a successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, but will complete the Ph.D. in Religious Studies or related field within one year of hire.

After you have submitted all of the required documents, you will see a confirmation number. At that point, each of your referees whose email addresses you have provided will receive an automatically-generated email requesting that he or she submit a letter of reference for you.
