Technical Manager- Emergent Media Center

Job Description:

Champlain College has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Technical Manager to join the team at the Emergent Media Center (EMC).

The Emergent Media Center (EMC) is an interactive media studio at Champlain College where students conceptualize, prototype, and produce a wide range of media and design solutions to challenges brought by community partners.

With the two main aims of creating opportunities for hands-on student learning and creating positive social impact, teams at the EMC explore and produce serious games and simulations, embodied systems and wearable technology, mobile apps, AR/VR/MR/XR, data visualizations, assistive and adaptive technologies, and physical computing, among other interactive experiences.

This new role of Technical Manager will be responsible for the technical oversight and successful delivery of EMC's wide range of development projects by fostering innovation, managing technical risks and opportunities, and contributing to development when needed.

Because the EMC is an educational environment, students are learning while working on projects. As such, the Technical Manager is equally committed to supporting and nurturing each student as much as they are to making sure that the teams meet their development goals. The Technical Manager supports the growth and development of student programmers' skills through mentoring, education, and direction, and are able to step into a project when needs are above students' existing capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Aid in all stages of development including pre- and post-production
  • Help to maintain our studio's technology; collaborate with Information Systems to maintain computer workstations and identify new software/hardware purchases
  • Work with the development team and faculty advisors for each project to create a tech strategy that considers the pipeline, tools, risks, and key development procedures
  • Collaborate with the project manager to support the success of each team
  • Oversee technical design documentation
  • Evaluate new technologies as opportunities for innovation
  • Supervise student production projects as needed

Requirements:

  • Have a solid understanding of software development or media creation processes; preferably using Unity and/or Unreal and GitHub/other version control.
  • Have a background in development with one or more Object Oriented Languages (C#, C++, Python, Java, Typescript, etc).
  • While a background in education is not required, an interest in teaching or mentoring college students is a must.
  • Be able to show compassion and empathy for student employees, especially in the critiquing process.
  • Have experience working in the Google Workspace (Gmail, GCalendar, Sheets, Docs, etc)
  • Practice a growth mindset and a willingness to explore new technologies.

Pluses:
  • Familiarity or experience using Monday.com, Slack, Discord, Mattermost or other project management software
  • Experience or comfort with Scrum agile development methodology
  • Experience with VR/AR and/or physical computing and/or robotics and/or rapid prototyping tools

Qualifications: Minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required. At least 2 years of technical development experience in software, mobile, web, interactive, XR and/or game. Travel may be required, but very limited.

If you feel passionate about this work and believe you have the skills to succeed in this role, even without meeting every qualification, please apply!
