Job Description
The Department of Media, Art and Design at the University of Missouri-Kansas City seeks applicants for a full-time, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor position in film and media arts. We seek candidates with experience making independent shorts, features, animation, or media art with sufficient knowledge of both narrative and documentary production methods for teaching these topics at the undergraduate intermediate level. The person in this position will teach in our hands-on media production curriculum, covering cinematography, lighting, sound recording, and editing within introductory and intermediate project-based courses. The successful candidate will also teach a basic video and audio production course for undergraduate students studying digital and public humanities. Ability to teach broad-based, introductory-level interdisciplinary courses within Media, Art and Design is preferred. The teaching load is four courses per semester.
This position will support students in the Media, Art and Design department as well as students working in the digital and public humanities as they develop projects and conduct original research that integrates digital methods with creative work and scholarship . The Department of Media, Art and Design at UMKC offers two undergraduate degrees that would be supported by this position – a B.A. in Media, Art and Design, a flexible course of study appealing to students in Digital Media, Visual Studies and Graphic Design, and a B.A. in Film and Media Arts, a rigorous course of study in film and video production, incorporating courses in film studies and art. We teach a small-crew, independent-artist approach to filmmaking. Our students create short films in courses covering narrative, documentary, animation and experimental modes, building a portfolio of original work and gaining experience in all phases of film production. Professional preparation for work in the film industry is part of our degree programs as well. Our classes include frequent visits and presentations by media professionals, and we have a robust internship program.
