About the Opportunity:

The Office of the Provost at Northeastern University guides and implements the university's academic plan and is led by the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Office of the Provost oversees 9 colleges, information technology, budget and planning, research, academic affairs, and the library. This spans across 16 divisions and the Office of the Provost budget and planning team provides direct budget and HR support for 4 of those 16. The Associate Director of Finance will manage budget and financial modeling support for Provost Research, 1 of the 4 divisions.

This position reports to the Director of Strategic Financial Planning and will be part of the Office of the Provost Budget, Planning, and Administration team. This team is led by the VP for Finance and Administration and consists of the AVP for Financial Planning and Analyst, Director of Finance and Administration, Director of Strategic Financial Planning, Associate Director of Finance and Administration, Budget Analyst, as well as 2 HR staff. The Provost Research and Burlington divisions are led by the SVP for Research and Vice President of the Innovation Campus. The Provost Research division also known as NU-RES leads all research activity across campus including proposal development, award administration, research development, and compliance to name a few. The SVP for Research is responsible for growing research at the university and has a dynamic portfolio.

Responsibilities:

The Associate Director of Finance will support the Director of Strategic Financial Planning on all fiscal matters and will work closely with financial administrators in the colleges ensure consistent management of the portfolio. The successful candidate will be able to work at both the detailed transactional level and the high summary strategic level simultaneously. The Associate Director will be responsible for leading projects and strategic initiatives for the Provost Research division as directed by the Director. Current initiatives include institutes, core facilities, and other research vehicles. The Associate Director is expected to take full ownership of the research portfolio, serve as the expert, and go to person for all fiscal matters, initiatives, financial modeling, and be able to identify areas of opportunity, improvement, or change.

They work closely with the institute faculty and all staff under the Provost Research and Burlington divisions. Provost Research fiscal responsibilities include handling financial transactions, reconciling monthly budget statements, preparing quarterly forecasts, and submitting the annual summary and detailed budget plans. They will produce regular and ad-hoc reports for multiple Senior Vice Provosts, Deans, department heads, and others to enable the strategic use of university funds. They will prepare complex financial analyses by tracking and forecasting account balances and manage fiscal year closings to ensure balanced budgets. Under the Director, the Associate Director will create financial models for institutes, other research vehicles, and the research enterprise at large.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 4-6 years of financial analysis experience, preferably in higher education. Portfolio of work should include modeling for new programs such sponsored programs, degree programs, strategic business unit expansion, etc.
  • MBA/master's degree in finance or management preferred.
  • Must be highly skilled using Microsoft Excel required, ideally PowerPoint as well.
  • Must have effective communication skills, orally and verbally.
  • Must be customer service oriented and partnership centric.
  • Must be well organized, flexible, accurate, technologically skilled, and able to manage multiple challenging projects simultaneously in a fast-paced high volume work environment.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to sort out complex information and ability to provide strong management, financial and operations oversight.
  • Articulate and effective communication skills.

  • Ability to work well under pressure, maintain confidentiality and work with diplomacy and tact required.
  • Ability to work in a team.

This role follows a hybrid work structure where employees will work partially remote based on demands or specific tasks related to the position. This arrangement is subject to change based on Northeastern need.
