Under the supervision of a faculty investigator, we are seeking a Research Specialist who will be responsible for independently performing a range analyses and tests on animal or human fluids and/or tissue or cultured cell lines. Work requires basic and advanced use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Uses understanding of theory behind experiments and applies analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes appropriate technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments, which may include tissue culture, cell separation methods, electrophoretic separations, assays, basic and advanced molecular biology, or other specialized histology and biological science techniques. Will be expected to function in an independent manner and participate in establishing new techniques/assays in the lab.
  • Responsible for troubleshooting experiments and will be encouraged to consult various resources for optimization.
  • Will utilize in vivo models in experiments.
  • Extracting DNA and performing molecular tests such as genotyping and DNA sequencing.
  • Analyzing genotyping and sequencing results.
  • Maintain large colony of mice, including breeding, genotyping and record maintenance.
  • Design and perform drug trials for various mouse models.
  • Perform various histology techniques, from imbedding and sectioning to staining and using microscopy to view/analyze slides.
  • Assist in general maintenance of the laboratory as needed.
  • Will assist in the preparation of any manuscripts resulting from work in the lab.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Basic understanding of molecular biology and genetics. Requires the ability to safely operate scientific laboratory equipment.
  • Requires flexible work hours beginning as early as 6:00 a.m. and/or ending as late as 6:00 p.m.
  • The job requires superior organizational skills for time and data management.
  • Ability to function well in a team production setting is necessary.

Machines/Equipment used

  • Robotic and manual liquid handlers, common laboratory equipment, and PC computers.
Physical Requirements
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s).
  • Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm.
  • Ability to see and hear within normal parameters.
  • Lift, carry, move supplies, computers, glassware, etc.
  • Ability to move about workspace.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  • Mouse Handling.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
