Salary Range: $4,691.00 per month to $6,683.00 per month. PLEASE NOTE: The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $4,691.00 per month to $5,687.00 per month.

About the Position
Under the general direction of the Executive Director of AACE, the Career Counselor independently provides comprehensive individual and group career counseling to undergraduates, graduate students, and recent alumni to enhance identifying and pursuing career goals and appropriate educational preparation to meet those goals. The primary focus of this position is to enhance career guidance, programming and coordination of resources primarily (but not exclusively) for currently enrolled students. The incumbent maintains a comprehensive knowledge of complex changes in the workplace and economic outlook as they impact student career choices, preparation, and employment; coordinates and administers assigned programs to achieve programmatic goals; works in collaboration with other members of the AACE team on events and campus outreach efforts; contributes to the production of publications and marketing materials (flyers, brochures, website content, and campus bulletins); leads assigned special project coordination and implementation; serves as a liaison to internal and external entities related to assigned programs. A significant percentage of this position is devoted to career counseling sessions, necessitating that the incumbent maintains a dependable, prompt work schedule congruent with office operating hours. Workshop facilitation responsibilities will require the ability to work occasional evening or weekend hours with limited advance notice.
Provide individual and group assistance primarily to undergraduate and graduate students, but also to recent alumni in defining career options, developing employment skills, learning job search techniques and addressing other career related needs. Facilitate learning by assisting them to secure appropriate career experiences to enhance overall academic experience. Administer and interpret interests, skills, abilities, and values assessment instruments, including but not limited to MyersBriggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Strong Interest Inventory (SII), CliftonStrengths, and Holland’s Self-Directed Search (SDS). Abide by ethical, professional (CAS, NACE) standards and educational laws (FERPA) related to advising and counseling. Demonstrate sound professional judgement when making decisions.
Develop, coordinate and administer career related programs and services for current students. Serve as a primary contact for Handshake and other software systems. Work in collaboration with members of AACE to develop, coordinate and facilitate training and skill development workshops, programs, and special events.
Assist Employer Relations Coordinator with outreach to employers as requested. Make contact through associations, phone calls, events, and other opportunities. Help employers understand the benefits of associating themselves with the University, listing positions on Handshake, attending on-campus and virtual events, participating in on-campus and virtual interviews and career fairs, and building and maintaining long-term relationships with AACE and academic departments.
Serve as an ambassador for AACE in the campus community, consulting with academic departments on student career programming, marketing services, events and opportunities, and ensuring that career needs are addressed. Contribute to publications and publicity material (flyers, brochures, website content, and campus bulletins)
Contribute to the goals of AACE and the Academic Programs and Services (APS) Unit while understanding the need for collaboration between Academic Affairs and Student Affairs to best serve students. Represent the university and AACE at assigned professional association workshops and conferences. Complete other duties as assigned.
- Thorough knowledge of research and interview techniques; current employment trends and salary structures; principles of individual and group behavior; student development and counseling theories, particularly those that address multi-cultural populations, and career decision making and job search processes.
- Thorough knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling; ability to present clear and concise information orally, online and in written materials; ability to compose and format correspondence and prepare reports.
- Knowledge of career assessment inventories and tools, from administration to interpretation.
- Strong presentation skills and the ability to design presentations for a diversity of constituencies, ranging from students and families to faculty, staff and administrators.
- Proficiency with computer environment, including word processing and GoogleSuite, knowledge to effectively utilize internet resources and keep current with new and changing technology in career services.
- Must possess effective time management and training abilities, as well as marketing and public relations skills to a diverse audience.
- Strong organizational, program development and multicultural communication skills, as well as creative thinking and reasoning abilities and demonstrated competency to oversee multiple tasks with attention to detail.
- Ability to carry out a variety of complex assignments without detailed instructions, including making decisions to resolve problems where guidelines and precedents do not exist.
- Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.
- Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and implementing long range program improvements.
- Ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make effective verbal or written presentations related to these data.
- Ability to empathize and maintain positive regard for students struggling with career and life related issues.
- Ability to source, track, and retain detailed information which changes on a regular basis.
- Ability to recognize and continuously seek new knowledge in the areas of multicultural, multigender, and multigenerational value systems and work accordingly.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends when required.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds of marketing materials during events as needed.
- A valid CA driver’s license in order to operate electric golf cart during events as needed.
- Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.
- A Master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
- A Doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
- Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or University in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
- Master’s Degree (Career Counseling, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, or similar).
- Highly motivated, high energy, team-oriented individual committed to diversity and social justice.
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment. Cal State East Bay will issue a conditional offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Unsatisfactory results may also affect the continued employment of current Cal State East Bay employees who were conditionally offered the position.
