Job Details

Wofford College invites applications for a highly motivated and collaborative advising professional to serve as the inaugural director of academic advising. Reporting to the associate provost for curriculum and co-curriculum and indirectly to the provost, the new director will work in partnership with departments and offices across campus to strengthen the academic advising program at a student-centered, undergraduate liberal arts college. The director will have the opportunity to set the direction for the advising program, leading the college’s efforts in comprehensive student advising and ensuring that advising at Wofford serves all students equally well.

The director of advising is responsible for supervising the college’s advising program for first-year and undeclared students and coordinating with department chairs on matters related to major advising. The director serves as an active resource for faculty advisors on academic policy, general education and graduation requirements, and provides professional development for faculty advisors, particularly in matters related to diversity, equity and inclusion in the advising process.

Additionally, the director will hire and supervise an assistant director of academic advising. The assistant director will focus on pre-professional advising in the health sciences.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide leadership for a seamless advising experience across the college.
  • Integrate advising initiatives with equity-focused practices as part of the college’s broader DEI efforts, including assisting students of diverse backgrounds to navigate educational barriers.
  • Supervise the advising program for first-year and undeclared students.
  • Serve as the primary advisor for a cohort of students and students with specialized advising needs.
  • Coordinate summer advising for incoming first-year students.
  • Partner with academic units as they deliver major advising.
  • Facilitate professional development, training and workshops for faculty advisors.
  • Continue to improve our advising program, including through the development of both program-level assessment and individual advisor assessment instruments.
  • Membership on college committees, including academic standards committee and first-year student programs.
  • Teach one course per semester in areas of expertise or the general education curriculum.

REQUIRED SKILLS

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree.
  • Three years of relevant experience in academic advising.
  • Two years of leadership experience in higher education.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Doctoral degree
  • Five or more years of supervisory, management or leadership in academic advising
