Position Title:
Shared Instrumentation Facility, Microscope Manager

The Opportunity:

The Shared Instrumentation Facility (SIF) at Colorado School of Mines is seeking a primary manager for its atom probe (Cameca LEAP 4000X Si) and two scanning electron microscope / focused ion beam instruments (FEI Helios NanoLab 600i and Tescan S8252G). The successful candidate will be a part of the team of research staff who support research activities across the entire campus. The candidate will be primarily responsible for the day-to-day operations of these instruments, including maintenance and training. The candidate will work closely with faculty and graduate students and other researchers performing microscopy on these instruments.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintaining the instruments in good operating condition
  • Providing training and support for internal and external users
  • Maintaining laboratory safety
  • Analyzing samples for internal and external users
  • Engaging with the local microscopy community, and providing advice on specimen preparation and analysis methods
  • Maintaining instrument usage records for billing
  • Troubleshooting and correcting instrument problems and calling in service requests as needed
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or related Science or Engineering field
  • Minimum of 2 years direct experience in atom probe tomography including specimen preparation, instrument operation, and data analysis
  • Minimum of 2 years of direct experience in scanning electron microscopy and focused ion beam operation including APT specimen preparation via focused ion beam methods
  • Experience with atom probe tomography (APT) operation for materials science
  • Familiarity with the theory and data analysis techniques for APT
  • Experience with scanning electron microscopy / focused ion beam instruments (SEM/FIB) and associated techniques (EDX, EBSD, lift-out TEM and APT specimen preparation)
  • Familiarity with the theory and data analysis techniques for SEM/FIB
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or related Science or Engineering field
  • Experience working with students and training others
  • Experience managing instrumentation
  • Experience troubleshooting and recovering microscope issues, including vacuum, software, and hardware issues
  • Experience working with and communicating with service engineers
  • Experience with 3D imaging in SEM/FIB instruments
  • Experience with additional APT specimen preparation methods such as electropolishing
  • Experience analyzing a wide variety of materials via APT
  • Experience in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM)
  • Knowledge of other materials characterization techniques, such as Raman spectroscopy

Pay Range:

$70,000 - $85,000

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
